Overview
This build turns the Gemling Legionnaire into a dedicated Arc spell-totem caster, leaning on the ascendancy’s signature ability to grant additional quality to every gem. That extra quality is what makes the archetype tick: Arc deals more damage for each remaining chain, so stacking quality and extra chains pushes over 150% more damage against the first target while keeping Arc’s naturally excellent clear intact.
The totems themselves also scale hard on the Gemling. Each summoned Spell Totem adds cast speed, and by reaching the six-totem limit you improve cast speed by over 100%. Getting there requires leveling the Spell Totem gem to 23 and taking the Ancestral Bond keystone, which doubles the totem limit at the cost of spirit reservation. The result is a safe, high-throughput caster that damages from a distance while you stay out of harm’s way.
Because Mercenary lacks meaningful spellcaster notables on its slice of the passive tree, the build relies on a Split Personality jewel to begin allocating points from a different starting position, travelling up into the Sorceress area to reach the cast notables the build actually needs.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Excellent clear speed — Arc projectiles chain up to 30 times for huge area coverage
- Very strong single-target damage thanks to the per-chain quality scaling (150%+ more to the first hit)
- Safe totem playstyle lets you avoid danger without losing DPS
- Comfortable energy-shield defense with recharge, plus support-gem tuning to nullify enemy crit damage
- Clears most content including pinnacle bosses without a mirror-tier budget
Cons
- Not a league starter — needs several uniques and passive-tree pathing to come online
- Totems have low survivability and limited range, so bossing takes care and positioning
- Requires refunding traveling nodes after using the Split Personality jewel, which is fiddly
- Spirit management is tight — you lose spirit as you level, so gear up with spare headroom
Key Skills
- Arc — main damage skill; chains up to 30 times and scales more damage per remaining chain
- Spell Totem (level 23) — the delivery mechanism; more totems means far more cast speed
- Ancestral Bond — keystone that doubles the totem limit to reach six totems
- Entangle / Frostbomb / Elemental Weakness — second-weapon-set debuffs that soften enemies
- Critical Weakness (via Focus) — applied off the swap set to massively raise Arc’s crit damage
Gear & Anointments
The build is a fairly typical energy-shield spellcaster — the Arch Mage / mana-as-defense approach is possible but usually far too expensive, so ES scales better at a lower budget and upgrades over time. A handful of uniques are effectively mandatory:
- Split Personality jewel — mandatory to reach the cast notables efficiently
- Malagaro’s Virtuosity gloves + Effigy of Cruelty — cheap, easy crit scaling; the gloves fix crit damage bonus to a set value, freeing you to take otherwise-penalizing choices
- Darkness Enthroned belt — mandatory for spirit and quality via the Fox Idol and Blossom rune; aim for at least 80% increased effect of augments
- Focus (swap set) — applies Critical Weakness, roughly doubling crit chance with a single Entangle
- Heart of the Well and Prism of Belief — universal damage / energy-shield and gem-level jewels; the Arc-specific Prism is expensive, so treat it as an aspirational upgrade
Plan for around 40 Divine Orbs to be comfortable; specific item rolls should be confirmed against the source video.
Endgame Notes
The build is built for endgame — excellent mapping clear from Arc’s chaining, and solid pinnacle-boss damage once you respect the totems’ fragility and keep your debuffs applied. Balancing support gems to nullify extra crit damage from enemies is the main survivability lever alongside high ES recharge.
