Overview

This Blood Mage is built entirely around Atziri’s Contempt, a unique spear that pins Bloodstone Lances into enemies on every hit and grants Shattering Spite to detonate them. The detonation lands one enormous, infrequent hit — exactly the kind of hit that makes Bleeding shine. Because the explosion converts most of its damage to fire and lightning, the Blood Mage ascendancy is what lets that elemental hit still inflict physical Bleed, and it is the reason the whole setup is tied to this class.

The elemental-bleed angle has real advantages over a classic physical bleed: you can stack added damage of all three elements, layer multiple sources of extra damage, and feed Trinity and Elemental Conflux. Bleed is calculated from pre-mitigation damage and deals physical damage itself, so enemy elemental resistances stop mattering. Early on the build scales through generic damage and ailment magnitude; later it pivots hard into critical strikes, which boost both the initial hit and the crit-conditional ailment magnitude found on jewels and the tree.

Defensively it is a pure Blood Mage life stack: a much larger life pool with strong recovery, a chunk of damage slowed down over time, and optionally some damage redirected to mana — but no real mitigation or avoidance. The spear itself is cheap (around a chaos) and is enough to cruise tier 15 maps; one-shotting pinnacle bosses takes serious investment, though a budget version still kills them in two or three full combos.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Huge burst: a single Shattering Spite detonation plus bleed can delete pinnacle bosses when geared
  • Bleed ignores enemy elemental resistance, so no penetration or exposure juggling
  • Core unique is very cheap and already carries T15 maps
  • Blood Mage life pool and overflow (Life Remnants) give a comfortable buffer while mapping
  • Repulsion curse and Herald of Blood explosions help clear with minimal button pressing

Cons

  • Completely dependent on Atziri’s Contempt — the build does not function without it
  • Needs many uniques (and a large spirit budget) to come online; endgame stats are contested and pricey
  • No mitigation or avoidance, so big single hits and damage-over-time can still kill you
  • Bleed and crit are weak early; you level with a different setup and respec twice (at 72 and ~90)

Key Skills

  • Shattering Spite — weapon-granted detonator; more damage per lance up to a cap, leeches life from its elemental damage
  • Spearfield — lays down exploding spears to apply Bloodstone Lances quickly and kill weaker packs by itself
  • Entangle — fast cast from the weapon swap to apply Critical Weakness before a boss combo
  • Repulsion + Blasphemy — auto-applied curse whose explosions clear trash; Blasphemy also turns on the passive Blood Mage bonuses
  • Herald of Blood / Life Remnants — on-death explosions and ascendancy life overflow up to 50% above maximum

Gear & Anointments

Atziri’s Contempt (from the endgame Atziri encounter) is the foundation; a Perfect Jeweller’s Orb plus Flux can upgrade its granted skill, and a Vaal cultivation roll can swap weak mods for damage. The second weapon set is a rare wand with crit chance and cast speed to cast Entangle.

  • Sacred Flame sceptre for heavy extra fire damage and Purity of Fire (start with the fire Guiding Palm as a cheaper stand-in)
  • Effigy of Cruelty focus — up to 10% base crit when Entangle is in the rotation
  • Malagaro’s Virtuosity gloves to fix crit damage and push crit chance through Pinpoint Critical-style trades
  • Alpha’s Howl helmet for the spirit needed to run every reservation skill
  • Heart of the Well jewel for double extra-damage mods; rare jewels for crit-conditional ailment magnitude
  • Amulet choice: a cheap +fire-skill-level amulet (instil the Thaumaturgic Generator for passive power charges) or Defiance of Destiny for survivability
  • Rings stack flat added damage; body armour is the main life source and should redirect damage to mana; belt fixes strength and resistances

For leveling, the creator recommends Essence Drain + Contagion (with Dark Effigy from around level 30) and switching to the spear at level 72 with a full tree respec toward the bottom-of-tree bleed magnitude clusters.

Endgame Notes

Around level 90, do a second respec that drops generic damage increases for crit chance, since all defence comes from life. Lucidity and Chakra of Thoughts can redirect incoming damage to mana. Charge Regulation needs the Thaumaturgic Generator instil; use the Resonance keystone if your setup skews toward other charge types. A Concocted-supported life flask adds bleed magnitude, and Lavianga’s Spirits handles mana passively.
