Overview
This is the entry point of a three-part Blood Mage totem series: a Grim Pillars spell-totem setup built to carry a fresh character out of the campaign and into the first few map tiers without demanding a single expensive item. The engine is the 0.5 Spell Totem rework — totems no longer need charges to summon, and the totem limit is doubled, so every point of Spirit you can stack turns directly into another pillar-spewing totem doing your damage for you.
Grim Pillars plant a field of icicles that the totems keep re-casting on their own. Your job is to walk in, drop totems, and detonate the ice with a cheap secondary spell — the explosions are where a large slice of the damage actually lands. Because the totems are doing the casting, the playstyle is unusually low-pressure for early maps: place, reposition, pop crystals, move on.
The creator is explicit that this is not a leveling build. Level with something else through the campaign, then respec into totems once you hit maps. Blood Mage is the pick here for its life remnants and the fact that it converts most cleanly into crit later, but the shell itself works on almost any spellcaster.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Runs on roughly ten Exalts of gear — resistances and Spirit are the only real requirements
- Totems have long reach, so you can place and keep walking instead of standing in danger
- Strong AoE clear and respectable single target from the same setup
- Grim Pillars gems are cheap on the market, and Thaumaturgic Flux from the league mechanic levels them up quickly
- Freeze from the cold damage pins packs in place, which is forgiving for newer players
Cons
- Not viable for the campaign — it needs a respec at the start of maps
- Totems stop casting if you outrun their line of sight
- Heavy on-screen visual noise; the creator reports frame drops even on high-end hardware
- Spell damage leech does not apply to totem damage, so sustain has to come from elsewhere
Key Skills
- Grim Pillars (in Spell Totem) — the whole build; totems spam it and the icicles are your damage field
- Urgent Totems — mandatory support; faster placement plus cast speed on the totem’s spell
- Magnified Area — widens the pillar field for map clear
- Spark (with Biting Frost) — the detonator that shatters icicles for the explosion damage
- Frost Bomb + Elemental Weakness — exposure and curse to make up for not yet being specced into crit
- Coalescence — the survivability button while energy shield recharge is weak this patch
Gear & Anointments
Nothing exotic. Cap elemental resistances first, then chase Spirit — a scepter around 100 Spirit plus Spirit on the body armour is enough to run the early totem count. A wand with plus levels to spells is the single biggest damage upgrade available. The passive tree at this stage paths across to the totem cluster and Ancestral Bond, then dumps the rest into raw spell damage; the crit conversion comes later, once gear supports it. Specific uniques are not required at this stage.
Endgame Notes
The creator flags Ancestral Bond as the piece people miss — without it you never get the doubled totem count. Alternative ascendancies are viable: Infernalist for easier Spirit, Oracle for an extra totem early, Lich for defence. Blood Mage is chosen for where it ends up rather than where it starts.
