Overview
The middle chapter of the Blood Mage Grim Pillars totem series, covering the jump from early maps to a clean Tier 15 clear at around level 79 — on a raw T15 with no Atlas points invested. The headline change from the earlier version is the pivot away from generic spell damage and into crit: once gear reaches roughly level 76, the tree respecs fully into crit chance and crit damage, targeting a 50% crit rate so every Grim Pillar cast is a coin flip on a critical hit.
That pivot is what makes Blood Mage the correct ascendancy rather than an arbitrary one. Totems inherit your defensive auras but not your offensive buffs — they take your crit chance and crit damage directly. Build around those two stats and the totems scale with you; build around conditional damage buffs and they do not.
The other upgrade this stage is Spirit. A better scepter plus the realisation that Spell Totem itself grants a second totem means Ancestral Bond now doubles that to four — three in practice until Spirit catches up. More totems is close to linear damage, so Spirit on the scepter, body armour and amulet is the cheapest scaling available.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Reaches Tier 15 maps on modest gear and no Atlas investment
- Crit respec is a large, cheap damage jump once you can sustain 50% crit rate
- Totems inherit crit stats, so a single stat focus scales the whole build
- Grim Pillars gems remain cheap; Thaumaturgic Flux upgrades them to your level
- The tree is flexible enough to re-tool into any other spell later without rebuilding
Cons
- Penetration is wasted once exposure and curses push resistances negative
- Totem count is Spirit-gated; without enough Spirit you run three instead of four
- Sustaining the spell costs gets harder as gem levels climb
- Still needs a manual curse and exposure sequence before totems for real boss damage
Key Skills
- Grim Pillars (in Spell Totem) — main damage; Urgent Totems and Magnified Area are the mandatory supports
- Spark with Biting Frost — detonates the icicles; Fork and Projectile Acceleration to spread it
- Frost Bomb (Potent Exposure) — still worth the slot after the crit respec
- Elemental Weakness — stacks with exposure to shred cold resistance
- Coalescence + Second Wind — two charges of recovery for boss fights
- Ley Lines — experimental damage layer; trades runic ward for more spell damage while standing on it
Gear & Anointments
The gear list is short: cap resistances, stack Spirit, and get plus levels to spells on the wand. The creator’s wand at this stage gives plus three levels, pushing Grim Pillars to gem level 22. A scepter with as much Spirit as you can afford determines your totem count. Body armour and amulet pick up the remainder. Once a perfect Jeweller’s Orb opens a fifth support slot, Rakiata’s Flow on Spell Totem is called out as the upgrade that takes the build to the next level. An anoint on a crit damage notable is suggested as the natural use of the amulet.
Endgame Notes
Boss damage at T15 lands around two million over the fight window with exposure and curse applied first. The pattern is fixed: exposure, curse, then totems, then reposition. Frozen bosses can simply be left to sit while you re-apply debuffs.
