Overview
This Path of Exile 2 take on a classic casts Detonate Dead on Skeletal Brute corpses produced by Spirit-reserved Skeleton minions. The Sacrifice spirit reservation lets Undead minions count as corpses for Detonate Dead’s targeting, turning a normally niche corpse spell into a sustainable AoE blast that scales with each minion’s life pool.
Blood Mage is the chosen ascendancy specifically for the Life Remnants overflow — combined with Grim Feast on energy shield, the build doubles both its life pool and its energy shield while clearing, leaning into pure defense rather than fast movement. The base crit modifier from the ascendancy also lifts Detonate Dead’s awkward 8% innate crit chance up to a useful number without crafting around it.
The build leans on a small set of unique items (the Aeris helmet, an Eaon Charge wand) and on Mana Tempest for single-target. It is not a fresh-character build — Sacrifice unlocks at level 58, so the recommended path is to level on the side with a minion shell (Unfolding Dawn body armour + Oakor shield), finish the first three ascendancy points via Trial of the Sekhemas, then swap to Detonate Dead post-campaign.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Strong all-content runner — handles maps, Breach, Expedition, Ritual, and pinnacle bosses on one passive tree.
- Extremely tanky thanks to dual overflow (Life Remnants + Grim Feast) — energy shield can sit near double its sheet value while mapping.
- Cheap to start once you reach the gear threshold: most slots are open and the build performs well in SSF.
- Has a dedicated single-target gem setup that swaps in for bosses without restoring a passive tree.
- Damage scales with minion HP, so investing in your scepter’s
+levels to all minion skillspays dividends across both the brutes and the detonation damage.
Cons
- Cannot be played as your first-ascendancy build — Sacrifice doesn’t unlock until level 58.
- Requires the leveling detour through minions (or some other shell) for the early campaign.
- White-pack clear is sluggish until the corpse-conservation chain is high enough to keep casting on a single corpse.
- Aiming Detonate Dead away from the minion stack causes failed casts — getting the muscle memory right takes the first hour.
Key Skills
- Detonate Dead — main damage, kept at level 7 (damage doesn’t scale with gem level). Linked with Magnified Effect, Corpse Conservation, Spell Ambush, Brutality.
- Sacrifice — 60-spirit reservation that makes the build function. Without it, you have no corpses to detonate.
- Skeletal Brute (+ Skeletal Cleric) — the “ammo” for Detonate Dead. Linked with Meat Shield, Minion Mastery, Physical Mastery, Elemental Army to push each brute’s HP past 30k. Three brutes + one cleric is the comfort floor, four + two is the goal.
- Grim Feast — energy shield overflow, the defensive backbone. Always-on while mapping.
- Mana Tempest — drop-on-spot, single-target damage amplifier for boss windows. Linked with Premeditation, Inspiration, Murderous Intent.
Gear & Anointments
The two anchor uniques are the Aeris helmet (gain maximum life as extra maximum energy shield — pushes ES into the 4-9k overflow band) and an Eaon Charge wand (chance to not consume corpses; stacks with Corpse Conservation and tree nodes to reach ~75% retention). Everything else is open rare-slot work: pure energy shield on body armour, ES + movement speed boots, strength + resists on belt to free the tree from small attribute clusters. The scepter is the main money slot — +levels to all minion skills is the priority stat; avoid Skeletal Warrior implicits and reach for the Malice implicit if you can afford it. Spirit on amulet is nice-to-have, not required.
Endgame Notes
For pinnacle and uber bosses the creator swaps the gem layout: a second Detonate Dead links Concentrated Effect + Minion Pack + Considered Casting + Corpse Conservation + Spell Ambush. Spirit Feed is kept in the rotation for the 42% more damage on impaled-minion windows. The whole-AOE wheel on weapon set 1 and a crit-cluster on weapon set 2 covers map vs boss workloads without forcing a respec — switching weapon sets at the boss door is enough.
