Overview
This build turns the reworked Gemling Legionnaire into a tactical demolition specialist, leaning entirely on the patch 0.5 grenade rework. Instead of sustained projectile DPS, every encounter becomes a controlled sequence of timed blasts — explosive, cluster, flash and oil grenades each hit far harder than their base versions thanks to enhanced quality scaling, rewarding positioning and rapid volleys.
The whole kit runs off a single weapon with no swapping required, which keeps the playstyle stable and approachable. All damage and utility come from one setup, so the player is free to focus on movement and detonating packs. A Redemption crossbow underpins the engine, feeding cooldown recovery, extra projectiles and attack speed while explosive-rhythm stacks keep the rotation flowing.
It is a flexible, beginner-friendly grenadier that scales smoothly from the campaign into the endgame: each grenade type adds a distinct tactical benefit — explosive for burst, cluster for wide chains, flash for blind/stun control and oil for elemental exposure debuffs.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Extremely high clear speed — grenade chains wipe entire packs in one or two volleys
- No weapon swapping; a single setup handles both mapping and bosses
- Strong on low investment with a sharp power spike from just a few early upgrades
- Levels with grenades from the very start of the game, so progression is smooth
- Layered life / evasion / deflection defenses plus Wind Dancer create a wide safety zone
Cons
- Explosive grenade’s longer detonation time makes it clunky for pure clearing (it is the boss/single-target tool)
- Grenade builds are attribute-hungry, so gearing has to cover a lot of stat requirements
- Mirage Archer and Mortar Cannon have cooldowns, so peak boss damage is windowed
- Screen can get noisy with constant explosions
Key Skills
- Explosive Grenade — primary high-damage skill, strongest single hits, used mainly on rares and bosses
- Cluster Grenade — main mapping skill; near-instant detonation via quality, clears large groups efficiently
- Flash Grenade — fastest grenade; blinds and stuns for safety while still dealing damage
- Mortar Cannon — ballista totem that fires explosive volleys; quality raises the totem limit to two for boss DPS
- Oil Grenade — coats enemies and ground, applies elemental exposure (-20% res) and fuels follow-up detonations
Gear & Anointments
Weapon archetype is a crossbow, ideally the Redemption unique for the strongest grenade scaling through cooldown recovery and extra projectiles — aim for a high roll on % physical damage and gaining explosive rhythm every two grenade uses. Constricting Command keeps the “while surrounded” bonuses active even in small packs, and Heart of the Well is a universal jewel that slots in cleanly. The build functions well without these uniques: a well-rolled rare crossbow with +levels to projectile skills, high physical damage and optional extra grenade activations can compete during progression. Rare items focus on life, evasion, deflection, capped resistances and the attributes grenades demand. Socket Rune of the Chase in the boots.
Endgame Notes
The tree front-loads grenade nodes early, then paths through every damage and evasion cluster. Once Constricting Command is online (around level 38+) the “while surrounded” nodes give a large offense/defense spike since you are essentially always surrounded while throwing grenades. Recommended ascendancy order: Gem-Studded → Integrated Efficiency → Essence of Virtue → Advanced Theory.
