Overview
Spud The King’s Warbringer Warrior uses Shield Wall as its core damage mechanism, planting rows of shields across the screen and detonating them with Infernal Cry and Fortifying Cry for explosive AoE bursts. The Warbringer ascendancy’s Warcaller’s Bellow node removes the cooldown from warcries, turning the build into a near-continuous explosion machine while passively generating Rage for sustained melee damage between warcry detonations.
The build is one of the most approachable league starters available: plant Shield Wall in front of a pack, shout Infernal Cry, watch the shields collapse in a chain explosion. This loop is intuitive, visually satisfying, and effective at one-shotting most campaign enemies including rare monsters. Fortifying Cry adds a defensive layer and contributes additional detonations, while Infernal Cry’s fire shockwave maintains ignite uptime on any enemies that survive the initial wall collapse. Rage accumulates passively from warcry use, keeping the attack-speed bonus topped up without dedicated investment.
Gear requirements are relaxed: any one-handed mace paired with a reasonable shield covers the core mechanic. The shield slot provides natural block chance, meaningfully improving survivability through acts without requiring a second tree investment. Warcaller’s Bellow is the single most important ascendancy node to acquire — once it is online, the build reaches full rhythm and clears feel satisfying all the way to maps.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Very low button count — intuitive warcry + Shield Wall detonation loop
- Warcaller’s Bellow removes warcry cooldown for continuous explosions
- Natural block chance from the shield slot improves survivability
- Effective against both packs and bosses via Shield Wall stacking
Cons
- Shield Wall positioning requires minor planning against mobile bosses
- Slower clear speed than spell-based builds when walls miss optimal placement
- Rage generation is tied to warcry use; must keep shouting for the damage bonus
- Single-target relies on wall stacking rather than direct melee attacks
Key Skills
- Shield Wall — Core damage skill; plants explosive shield rows
- Infernal Cry — Primary detonation warcry; fire damage and Rage generation
- Fortifying Cry — Secondary warcry; detonation and defensive fortify buff
- Mace Strike — Basic melee attack between warcry cooldowns pre-Warcaller’s Bellow
- Herald of Ash — On-kill ignite spread for pack clearing
Gear & Anointments
Main Hand: One-handed mace, prioritise flat physical damage rolls. Off-hand: Shield with block chance, life, and resistances.
Body Armour: Strength-based with life and armour. Helmet: Life and resistances. Boots: Movement speed mandatory.
Warcaller’s Bellow is the essential Warbringer ascendancy node — acquire it as soon as possible after the act 2 ascendancy choice, as it defines the build’s entire rhythm.
Leveling / Campaign Notes
Plant Shield Wall ahead of advancing packs and use Infernal Cry to detonate. Fortifying Cry provides fortify stacks on tough act bosses. Rage builds from warcry use and passively boosts attack speed during melee phases. Once Warcaller’s Bellow is unlocked, warcry cooldown disappears and the build enters its full explosive loop — from this point, Shield Wall detonations fire continuously and the campaign becomes a satisfying chain of explosions.
