Overview
Flameblast and Oil Grenade have become a popular Gemling Legionnaire pairing, but Flameblast itself is not available until level 52 — which leaves a long stretch of campaign to cover with something else. This guide is the leveling half of that build: a cold-to-fire route that carries a Mercenary from Act 1 to the Flameblast swap without needing trade or expensive gems.
The early game runs Permafrost Bolts into Fragmentation Round. Permafrost freezes the target, and Fragmentation Round carries a large damage multiplier against frozen enemies, so the combo is reserved for rares and bosses while ordinary packs die to the primary skill. Support gems layer in as they drop: Ice Bite on Permafrost Bolts, then Elemental Armament, Concentrated Effect on Fragmentation Round, and Close Combat once tier-three supports appear. Flat added damage on gear — physical, cold, fire or lightning — is the single biggest leveling accelerator, and the vendor stock refreshes on every level-up, so weapon upgrades are checked constantly.
The ascendancy order is deliberate and involves a planned respec. Sense of Virtue comes first for the Virtuous Body Armour recovery, then Mortic Implants for +2 to Dexterity gems — which is a large early boost while the character is still on Permafrost and Fragmentation Round. On reaching the Ziggurat that point is respecced into the gem-quality node, since Flameblast quality is what drives the build’s ignite magnitude to roughly 480% more.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Solo-self-found friendly: no trade or expensive lineage supports required to level
- The freeze-into-Fragmentation-Round combo trivialises early rares and bosses
- Clear ascendancy ordering that maximises damage at every stage rather than only at the end
- Ends in a build the creator cleared all content with on a three-divine budget
- Scales into a pure energy shield endgame version (~18k energy shield, ~10 million DPS)
Cons
- Flameblast is not usable until level 52, so the whole campaign is played on a placeholder setup
- Requires a full respec plus a two-weapon-set configuration at the Act 4 swap — fiddly to set up
- Quad Armament is a damage loss if the weapon already carries high fire or lightning damage
- The five-link (Greater Jeweller’s Orb) that pushes damage sharply is tied to league mechanic drops
Key Skills
- Permafrost Bolts — leveling clear and the freeze setup for the boss combo
- Fragmentation Round — leveling single target; large multiplier against frozen enemies
- Flameblast — the level 52 payoff skill, scaled through ignite magnitude and gem quality
- Oil Grenade — the clear-speed half of the endgame setup, on its own weapon set
- Infernal Cry / Raging Cry — rage generation folded into the boss rotation for more attack damage
Gear & Anointments
Weapon quality dominates the entire leveling process — flat elemental and physical damage on the weapon outweighs almost every other upgrade, and the vendor should be re-checked at each level-up. Rings are the second priority, with a Granulated ring drop in the Cemetery of the Eternals worth rolling for flat damage. At the Act 4 swap the build splits across two weapon sets: set one takes ignite speed, fire damage, Flame Keeper and stacked attack-ignite-magnitude notables plus Searing Heat; set two takes projectile damage, projectile speed, movement speed penalty reduction and — most importantly — cooldown recovery rate for Oil Grenade. Elemental Weakness is assigned to both sets. The five-link from a Greater Jeweller’s Orb goes on Flameblast first, with a second one saved for the grenade setup.
Endgame Notes
After the campaign the recommended landing spot is the creator’s three-divine budget version, which cleared all content in 0.5. Once currency accumulates, the target is the pure energy shield endgame variant — roughly 18k energy shield with the grenade permanently active and burning ground doing most of the killing.
