Overview
Iron Ward Infernalist is a close-range, shield-carrying take on the Infernalist that trades the safety of distance for a sturdier frontline kit. Instead of casting from the back of the screen, the build charges into packs with Shield Charge, keeps Iron Ward running for fire pressure and area coverage, and leans on Raise Shield to absorb the hits that would otherwise end a fight.
Damage comes in layers rather than from one big button. Despair and Enfeeble weaken whatever is nearby, Withering Presence stacks chaos pressure on anything that stays close, and two Cast on Elemental Ailment setups fire off Contagion and Frostflame Nova automatically while the character keeps fighting. Fire and chaos work together, so rares and bosses melt over a longer engagement instead of in a single burst.
The appeal is a darker, heavier Infernalist fantasy: walk into the pack, curse it, let ignites and wither do the work, and block the big telegraphed attacks. It rewards players who like being in melee range with a caster toolkit behind them.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Tankier than typical Infernalist casters thanks to Raise Shield, Iron Ward and curse-based damage reduction
- Several damage sources (ignite, wither, Contagion, Frostflame Nova) stack on top of each other
- Simple core loop: charge, curse, let triggers and auras grind enemies down
- Scales well with fire, chaos, curse effect and shield investment
Cons
- Needs curses, triggers and Withering Presence all running before it feels complete
- Plays closer to enemies, so clear is more controlled than a full-ranged speed mapper
- Raise Shield timing matters; reacting too late to heavy attacks is punished
Key Skills
- Iron Ward — core frontline skill, supported for ignite, larger area and fire scaling
- Shield Charge — main engage and movement tool for diving into packs
- Despair / Enfeeble — curses that boost chaos damage and cut incoming damage
- Withering Presence — aura that ramps chaos pressure on enemies that stay near you
- Cast on Elemental Ailment — triggers Contagion and Frostflame Nova for extra spread and burst
Gear & Anointments
Build around a shield-and-caster setup that supports blocking. Priorities are fire and chaos damage, curse effect, ignite chance, area of effect, life, resistances, armour and sustain. Wildwood’s Gifts is part of the utility kit. Specific uniques and anointments to be confirmed against the source video and linked build planner.
Endgame Notes
Against rares and bosses, keep Despair applied and Withering Presence ticking, use Shield Charge to reposition, and raise the shield before big attacks rather than after. The build is strongest in longer fights where enemies stay inside its aura range.
