Overview

This is KallTorak’s third take on an Iron Ward build, and the one he calls his favourite. Iron Ward is a spirit gem that stores kinetic energy whenever you take physical damage and mitigate it through armour or physical damage reduction, then detonates that stored charge for a large burst of area damage. The long-standing problem with the archetype is that it depends on getting hit, so the whole build is about automating that incoming damage rather than waiting on enemies or thorns.

The engine here runs through Rat Cage and the Infernalist ascendancy. Pyromantic Pact replaces your mana with Infernal Flame and deals fire damage to you when that flame fills; Rat Cage then converts 100% of that fire hit into physical damage, which your armour and physical damage reduction soak to charge Iron Ward. By pushing maximum mana as low as possible and pumping the cost of a single Elemental Weakness cast, one or two taps of the curse tops off Infernal Flame and generates a full Iron Ward charge. Bringer of Flame makes all damage contribute to flammability and ignite magnitude, so there is no conversion juggling — you simply scale gem levels and ignite magnitude and the ignites do the work.

The headline is defence. Between Mageblood, heavy armour stacking, layered physical damage reduction, and life stacking past 4,000 life, PoB shows over 100k effective HP — by the creator’s own account the tankiest character he has ever played, able to face-tank 200% Delirium Rite of the Nameless, simulacrums, and rituals.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Enormous effective HP (100k+ in PoB) with layered armour, physical damage reduction, life, block, and recoup
  • Fully self-sufficient engine — one or two curse taps generate Iron Ward, no reliance on being hit
  • Recoup does the healing, so no life flask is needed; Wildfire lets you idle-farm simulacrum and ritual content
  • Bringer of Flame removes conversion headaches, letting damage scale freely into ignite

Cons

  • Not a cheap build — leans on Mageblood and several corrected/corrupted uniques
  • Attribute requirements are demanding, forcing careful travel-node min-maxing on the tree
  • Movement is sluggish without a Quicksilver flask in the current itemisation
  • Damage is good but not top-tier; the build sells tankiness and idle farming over raw speed

Key Skills

  • Iron Ward — core spirit gem; stores mitigated physical damage and detonates it for AoE burst
  • Elemental Weakness — the engine trigger; a high-cost single cast fills Infernal Flame to charge Iron Ward
  • Rat Cage (via Pyromantic Pact) — converts self-inflicted fire damage into physical damage to feed Iron Ward
  • Spear Field / Siphoning Spear — applies aggravated bleed, which aggravates ignites for damage
  • Frost Bomb — weapon-swap exposure setup for bossing

Gear & Anointments

The weapon is Rune Seeker’s Call, chosen for its gain-as-extra and added fire damage, which the creator rates as by far the best option for this build. Rat Cage is the mandatory chest, ideally Rune Mastered with four sockets and an additional physical-damage-reduction enchant, socketing Legacy of Blackbraid (armour applies to elemental) and Guatelitzi’s-style recoup jewels. Mageblood carries the flask suite (basalt and granite for physical mitigation), and a Zoph’s Blood amulet supplies max life and enemy fire-resistance reduction. Other pieces called out include Grip of the Councillor gloves-slot uniques, a Hollow Mask for 17% additional physical damage reduction, and Remnants of Calanar hosting Her Declaration cheaply via reservation efficiency.

  • Anointment: Pliable Flesh, supporting the recoup-based defence
  • Critical jewel: a Flesh Crucible with Eldritch Battery and less maximum mana is required — it shrinks the Infernal Flame pool so a single cast can top it off
  • Jewels: a +3 Prism of Loyalty for Iron Will, Grand Spectrum rubies for life stacking, and Sacrifice of Flesh for tankiness

Specific unique rolls and corruptions should be confirmed against the source video, as several pieces rely on lucky double-corrupts.

Endgame Notes

The build is tuned as an idle-farming juggernaut for high-tier content. Wildfire pads keep ticking while you stand still, so 200% Delirium simulacrums and rituals can be face-tanked and largely AFK’d. Recoup replaces active healing. The creator notes the archetype could be ported to Gemling or Chronomancer, but recommends sticking with Infernalist for the smoothest feel.
