Overview
The Ironbound Warbringer is an unconventional Warrior league starter for Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5 that wields a bow rather than traditional melee weapons. The build centres on the Ironbound, a unique Warden Bow whose built-in Arrow Return Effect causes arrows to arc back toward the caster after hitting, effectively doubling hits per attack. Combined with the Warbringer ascendancy’s rage mechanics, this double-hit interaction produces consistent burst damage from a safe ranged position throughout the campaign.
Damage scaling relies primarily on Rune Forging, the crafting system added in patch 0.5. Slotting physical and elemental damage runes directly into the Ironbound bow turns the weapon itself into the primary scaling vector, bypassing the Warrior class’s typical reliance on melee-oriented passive nodes. Because Rune Forging does not consume the item, you can iterate rune combinations freely as the league progresses without risking the bow.
For a league start, the combination of a farmable unique, self-sufficient damage scaling through Rune Forging, and Warbringer’s rage-fuelled attack speed means the build remains powerful from first equip through the end of the campaign with minimal trade dependency.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Arrow Return Effect doubles hit count, boosting damage and ailment application without extra skills
- Rune Forging scales damage from any quality runes, requiring no orb investment
- Warbringer rage generation keeps attack speed high across the entire campaign
- Ranged positioning reduces the threat of melee-heavy campaign bosses
- Unconventional archetype means low competition for Ironbound on league day
Cons
- Ironbound is the mandatory core item — there is no fallback bow that replicates the Arrow Return interaction
- Warrior’s natural Dexterity deficit requires attribute investment to equip the bow and use bow skills
- Warbringer ascendancy nodes are melee-focused; the build uses them for raw stats rather than direct synergy
- Endgame transitions require significant rune quality upgrades and gear replacements to keep pace with map-tier scaling
Key Skills
- Rain of Arrows — Primary attacking skill; rains a volley of arrows over the target area, each projectile gaining the Ironbound’s Arrow Return Effect for a second pass over the area
- Infernal Cry — War Cry that generates Rage and exerts upcoming attacks with bonus fire damage conversion, amplifying the next Rain of Arrows volley
- Berserk — Consumes accumulated Rage for a short burst of massively increased attack speed and damage; best reserved for Act bosses and rare encounters
- Enduring Cry — Generates Endurance Charges and recovers life on use, providing the main defensive layer when the character needs to absorb a hit
Gear & Anointments
The Ironbound (Warden Bow base) is the non-negotiable core. The Arrow Return Effect is unique to this item and cannot be reproduced on a rare bow. Target it through early Ritual encounters in Acts 1–2 or via targeted drops in applicable zones.
Rune Forging priority: Start with the highest physical damage rune available. Once Physical damage is comfortable, add a secondary fire or lightning rune to diversify ailment sources and reduce any single resistance-capping concerns.
Outside the bow, prioritise Life and Strength on all other slots — Strength is needed for Warrior skill requirements, and Life underpins the Enduring Cry defensive loop. A high-armour chest from Ritual rewards keeps damage reduction solid for the duration of the campaign.
Amulet note: a rolled amulet or passive node that lowers Dexterity requirements on bow skills removes early attribute friction.
Leveling / Campaign Notes
Before acquiring the Ironbound, level as a standard Warrior through early Act 1 using two-handed mace or spear slam skills such as Earthshatter or Rolling Slam — both are available from the first weapon vendor. Switch to the bow the moment Ironbound drops and begin Rune Forging immediately.
War Cries should be used on cooldown from the moment you have two equipped. The exerted-attack buff from Infernal Cry is especially impactful against Act bosses; save Berserk as a phase-change cooldown for the most dangerous windows.
The Arrow Return Effect on bosses effectively doubles your DPS against a stationary target — position so the return arc passes through the boss a second time for maximum efficiency.
