Overview

The Disciple of Varashta ascendancy grants access to unique Djinn minions, and this build commits entirely to the Kalari. Djinn are unusual among minions: they do nothing passively and must be driven through manually activated command skills, so the character plays like a caster while its items and passives scale minion modifiers. The Archon of Undeath notable substantially improves both the damage and the cooldowns of those commands, and Puppet Master stacks raise skill speed while reducing the movement penalty each command imposes.

Kalari’s Deception is the primary damage source — a small explosion at a targeted location whose consecutive uses deal significantly more damage, so the correct boss opener is to bank all three charges before the fight. In the gaps you use Kalari’s Brutality for falling daggers or charge Kalari’s Judgment, which hits hardest of the three but is slow and long-cooldown. All Kalari skills carry a 15% base critical chance, which makes crit the obvious scaling axis, especially once the Critical Weakness debuff adds another 10%.

Defensively the build reaches very high energy shield, and the ascendancy makes that pool better than usual: faster recharge plus additional physical damage reduction. Chaos Inoculation makes you immune to chaos damage and bleeding, at the cost of being vulnerable to ignite — which interrupts recharge — and to stuns, which must be answered through energy shield stun threshold and quest rewards.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Early power scaling is exceptional; the build is effectively online at the second ascendancy point
  • Boss damage is described as absurdly high and very bursty
  • Djinn skills scale with the player, so gem levels never gate your main damage
  • Very few mandatory high-end uniques — perfect gear is expensive but entirely optional for pinnacle content
  • Silks of Veneration and Ever-Grasping Ring are strong budget options that cover most needed mods

Cons

  • Clear speed is only decent, limited by area coverage and command cooldowns
  • The skill rotation is genuinely complex at first, especially the pre-boss Archon buff setup
  • Requires completing the first ascendancy trial before Djinn are available at all — a levelling setup is mandatory
  • Chaos Inoculation makes you highly stun-vulnerable until stun threshold is addressed
  • Minion levels cannot roll naturally on a focus and must be desecrated for, which takes many attempts

Key Skills

  • Kalari’s Deception — main damage; consecutive casts on a living clone deal far more damage
  • Kalari’s Brutality — basic command, explosive daggers, unreliable area coverage
  • Kalari’s Judgment — hardest single hit once charged, but slow with a long cooldown
  • Rujahn’s Brand — used pre-boss to activate the Archon buff before its cooldown penalty applies, and later purely to stack Puppet Master
  • Entangle (weapon set two) — rapidly applies all 20 stacks of Critical Weakness before your burst
  • Wolf Pack, skeletal minions, Pain Offering — Muster fodder at 7% more damage each, plus debuffs and survivability

Gear & Anointments

The Dominion notable, available only via distilled emotions, is mandatory — it removes the lengthy cooldown the Archon buff otherwise imposes when its duration ends. Note the cooldown bonus does not apply retroactively, which is why Rujahn’s Brand is used to activate the buff before a boss fight begins.

On the amulet, +3 to level of minion skills is the priority and will dominate its price. Helmet needs the +2 minion mod and as much energy shield as affordable; a Raven-touched shard adds an anoint, or an Idol of Ralakesh improves reservation efficiency. Silks of Veneration is the standout budget body armour, later replaced by a rare with higher energy shield and recharge rate. Effigy of Cruelty sits on weapon set two purely to apply Critical Weakness stacks. Ever-Grasping Ring adds large extra chaos damage whose downside Chaos Inoculation negates outright. Calandra’s Touch copies your second ring and Ingenuity extends the same trick to the belt, both used to avoid paying for two expensive rare rings.

For jewels, From Nothing combos exceptionally with large-radius Time-Lost jewels — the basic configuration reaches 12 notables, and sacrificing Sacred Rituals for Beryline Ley Lines pushes that to 16. None of this is required to comfortably clear the game.

Endgame Notes

Levelling runs a chaos damage-over-time setup, Spark, or physical plants until the first trial is cleared, then swaps to minions immediately. Buying a trial service to get all eight ascendancy points in Act 2 is a legitimate shortcut. Prioritise Archon of Undeath and Growing Swarm for cooldowns, Puppet Master for speed, then nearby cooldown recovery smalls. Do not take Chaos Inoculation the moment the campaign ends — build a solid energy shield pool and fast recharge first, since some life helps with stuns and ailments during early mapping.
