Overview
This build is built around the Liminal Coil, a new unique wand introduced in the Runes of Aldur update that grants the Coiling Bolt skill. Coiling Bolt fires two merged projectiles — one physical, one chaos — that chain an unlimited number of times between cursed enemies and split into additional targets rather than gaining extra projectiles. The wand’s unusual modifiers let you ignore the curse limit and convert curse stacks into raw damage, so the entire playstyle revolves around stacking curses and firing a single, endlessly chaining bolt.
Because the wand grants 30% extra chaos and physical damage per curse on the target (while disabling those curses’ effects), the engine is curse density. Potent curses are applied manually with a second weapon set, while no-magnitude curses are automated through Blasphemy — reaching roughly 180% of damage gained as extra chaos and physical, or up to 360% as extra cold with the Impaler support.
Since scaling multiple damage types is awkward, the build pivots to critical strikes for universal scaling. As a Blood Mage it sets a 15% base crit and uses the Effigy of Cruelty to apply critical-weakness stacks quickly. Two flavors exist: a chaos/physical variant using armour break and wither, and a cold variant using elemental weakness and exposure that also freezes and slows.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Excellent clear — one projectile splits and chains across whole packs
- Very high single-target damage once curses and debuffs are stacked
- Coiling Bolts cost no mana and no life, enabling strong mana-as-defense and life-overflow layering
- The only hard requirement is the cheap Liminal Coil wand itself
- Cold variant adds freeze, slow and knockback for extra safety
Cons
- Not a league starter — the wand unlocks at level 78+ and the setup needs several support uniques
- Boss damage is back-loaded: you must apply all curses and debuffs first
- Weak raw damage mitigation; survival leans on crowd control and life/mana overflow
- Curse automation demands a lot of spirit (Alpha’s Howl is mandatory), squeezing defenses
- High complexity: dual weapon sets, two passive sub-trees and a crit pivot
Key Skills
- Coiling Bolt — the wand-granted main skill; two merged projectiles that split and chain between cursed enemies
- Blasphemy — applies linked no-effect curses that each grant ~60% extra damage via the wand
- Effigy of Cruelty (Entangle) — rapidly applies critical-weakness stacks on the second weapon set
- Withering Presence — supplies wither stacks for the chaos/physical variant
- Frost Bomb — heavy elemental exposure for the cold variant, mainly for pinnacle bosses
Gear & Anointments
The Liminal Coil wand is mandatory and the only source of Coiling Bolt; aim for max rolls on both extra-damage modifiers. Alpha’s Howl is required for the spirit needed to automate curses, and the Effigy of Cruelty plus Wicked Quill sit in the second weapon set to apply critical weakness and supplementary wither. Darkness Enthroned offers cheap movement speed, with Mageblood as the aspirational upgrade. Rare gear prioritizes +projectile skill levels, maximum life, energy shield (via Crimson Power), spirit and capped resistances; breach-crafted caster jewelry (cast speed) and Time-Lost jewels with crit-damage bonuses round it out. Use the Ancient Rune of Witchcraft to widen manual curse radius.
Endgame Notes
Split the passives into two sets — one specialized for curse effect (bound to the second wand) and one for damage — to massively boost curse magnitude without sacrificing offense. For the cold variant take Brain Freeze and Thin Ice; for chaos take Withered Away. Frost Bomb’s specialized exposure strips ~60% elemental resistance for pinnacle fights. Level with Essence Drain on the Lich tree and swap to the full setup once all the required items can be equipped.
