Overview
CaptainLance9 lays out a league-start leveling path for the Luminary, the aura-and-link “Mercbot” support identity, built around a smooth campaign run rather than a finished endgame build. The central insight is route choice: instead of committing early to a skill that drags the passive tree toward poison, projectile, or slam nodes that later have to be torn out, the plan leans into Righteous Fire. Its life-heavy tree already overlaps with what a Mercbot wants — life stacking for Flame Link, war cries, and aura effect — so the level-58 Righteous Fire tree and the level-70 full-support tree differ by only a handful of points, avoiding a painful respec.
Leveling opens as a Spectral Throw character because it demands the least gear churn. Spectral Throw drops in your lap in Act 1, you pick up a corroded blade to start, and you coast until your next two-handed sword. Everything else — vendoring magic and rare drops — funnels into transmute shards for the Righteous Fire swap around level 18, partway through Act 2, once the Golden Hand and Bale gem quests have handed you the extra passives and the Righteous Fire gem. Iron rings feed the ruby-ring vendor recipe (red gem plus iron ring), so you land somewhere around 150 to 200-plus fire resistance, and the fire mastery converts that resistance into the flat life regen that sustains Righteous Fire from Act 2 onward.
The mid-game pivot is the mercenary. Once you capture a Merc in Scepter of God and add your ascendancy, the companion shoulders more of the clear, and you steadily shift from personal damage toward buffing it through Flame Link, Purity of Elements, Haste, and Enduring Cry.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Minimal gear swapping — one starting blade, one two-hand sword upgrade, then coast
- Very cheap: white and transmute-tier crafting, the iron-ring ruby recipe, no gem tax on transmutes
- The passive tree barely changes between the Righteous Fire phase and the full Mercbot phase
- Righteous Fire feels strong early and can solo the entire campaign if you want
- Fire damage from Flame Link plus Scorching Ray exposure directly buffs the mercenary too
Cons
- A weak starting passive tree means early clear speed is only average
- Requires a planned respec around level 18 with transmutes and gold banked ahead of time
- Flame Link leans on Life Tap early until mana regen and the life-recovery mastery catch up
- Endgame gearing and early-map progression are out of scope — promised for a later video
Key Skills
- Spectral Throw — the Act 1 leveling attack; chosen for needing the least gear investment before the Righteous Fire swap
- Righteous Fire — core sustain-and-clear damage after the level-18 respec, scaling off life and fire resistance
- Scorching Ray — applies a -25% fire resistance exposure that stacks with Righteous Fire and improves the merc’s fire damage
- Flame Link — links to the captured mercenary, granting it fire damage scaled by your life pool
- Enduring Cry — endurance charges and heavy regen for both your own survivability and the mercenary’s
Gear & Anointments
Gear is deliberately minimal. You start on a corroded blade, move to a two-handed sword for Spectral Throw, and otherwise hoard currency. The Righteous Fire swap is powered by resistance rather than rare drops: convert your starting iron rings into ruby rings via the vendor recipe, bench-craft fire resistance onto both rings, and add fire resistance to every open suffix you can afford. White gear is workable; rare pieces with open suffixes are a bonus. Arrogance plus Vitality supplies regen for you and the merc, while Purity of Elements and Haste (swapped in for Skitter Bots mid-Act 3) cap the mercenary’s resistances and speed up your shield-charging.
- Corroded blade to start, then a two-handed sword for Spectral Throw
- Two ruby rings from the iron-ring vendor recipe, each bench-crafted with fire resistance
- Fire resistance bench crafts on every open suffix; aim for 150-200-plus total
- Arrogance + Vitality for regen; Purity of Elements + Haste as mercenary-supporting auras
- No named unique items appear in the source — specific uniques to be confirmed against the source video.
Endgame Notes
This video is strictly the league-start leveling plan; CaptainLance9 states that early-map progression and full endgame gearing are coming in later videos. The stated transition target is a full Mercbot that relies on the captured mercenary’s damage while you provide Flame Link, a curse (Elemental Weakness is recommended over Flammability so it also covers a merc’s flat lightning or cold), and optionally Combustion for extra fire penetration once you can reliably ignite.
