Overview
XTheFarmerX’s Storm Wave “Fister” Monk build revolves around the Hollow Palm Technique keystone at level 22, which dramatically amplifies unarmed damage and pairs naturally with the Acolyte of Chayula’s void-damage identity and energy shield recovery loops. For the first 21 levels the build runs a streamlined Glacial Cascade + Frozen Locus routine — detonating ice crystals for burst damage and using Frost Bomb to apply boss exposure — keeping complexity low and letting players learn the Monk chassis before the build’s main mechanic kicks in.
At level 22, Storm Wave replaces Glacial Cascade as the primary AoE tool. Hollow Palm Technique removes the need for a main-hand weapon, and the character transitions to Evasion/Energy Shield bases to feed the Acolyte of Chayula’s energy-recovery loops. Herald of Ice handles additional explode-on-kill clearing while Pounce covers movement between packs. The result is a near one-button experience: spam Storm Wave into packs, Frost Bomb before bosses.
XTheFarmerX tested this setup as a dedicated 0.5 Return of the Ancients preparation run, taking the character from level 1 through the atlas entry point (T1 maps) to validate the league-start viability. The build excels at easy early-game execution with a smooth midpoint transition.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Near one-button gameplay after the level 22 Hollow Palm transition
- Strong AoE clear through both Glacial Cascade and Storm Wave phases
- Hollow Palm reduces gear pressure post-22 — no weapon slot to worry about
- Validated as a 0.5 preparation run from level 1 to maps
Cons
- Monk act 1 is notoriously rough before the Hollow Palm loop comes online
- Energy shield recovery depends on finding quality EV/ES gear mid-campaign
- All weapon upgrades in acts 1-21 become throwaway once Hollow Palm activates
- Glacial Cascade spike positioning requires practice to hit maximum damage
Key Skills
- Glacial Cascade — Primary AoE clear in acts 1-21; aim for tip/spike hits
- Frozen Locus — Ice crystal placement for burst detonation
- Frost Bomb — Boss exposure and cold mitigation debuff
- Storm Wave — Primary AoE from level 22 with Hollow Palm active
- Herald of Ice — On-kill explosion spread for pack clear
- Pounce — Mobility between packs; sources the Devour skill
Gear & Anointments
Acts 1-21: Prioritise resistances, flat physical damage on rings, movement speed on boots, and +melee skill levels on gloves. A quality Quarterstaff is the single largest early damage upgrade. Changeling Talisman in off-hand slot for Pounce and Devour utility.
Level 22+: Switch to Evasion/Energy Shield base types. Remove main-hand weapon to activate Hollow Palm Technique. Body Armour with high combined ES and EV is the top priority.
Key support gems: Added Cold Damage, Concentrated Effect, Ice Bite, Elemental Armament, Cold Attunement.
Leveling / Campaign Notes
In acts 1-21: position Glacial Cascade to hit enemies with the spike (not the base) for maximum damage. Detonate Frozen Locus crystals placed near clusters of enemies. Apply Frost Bomb before every boss encounter. At level 22: remove main-hand weapon from gear, navigate the passive tree to Hollow Palm Technique, and switch primary attack to Storm Wave. Keep Pounce on cooldown for traversal between pack fights.
