Overview
This is a mechanics breakdown rather than a single, locked-in build. It covers the two ways to approach the Mercenary and the Luminary ascendancy: running a mercenary that supports your own character, and running a “merc-bot” where your character exists to feed a mercenary that does all the damage and clear. The recurring theme is that the mercenary is a power multiplier that a lot of players underrate.
Most of the runtime is spent on the support angle. A mercenary can carry a large stack of buffs for you through the gear it wears and the double-buff skills it can roll, letting you slot damage and defensive layers you would otherwise have to reserve for. The creator walks through unique choices, rare mods, aura effect scaling, extra curses, ailment sources, and war cry scaling, then explains how mercenaries actually pick their skills so you can hire (or buy off the warrant/trade) one that behaves well.
Everything is framed with the caveat that the upcoming league could re-shuffle mercenary skills or balance, so specifics should be treated as a working model until the league is live rather than a finished, tested build.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Large “free” power multiplier: uniques like Perquil’s Toe (roughly 30% more for lightning), Mask of the Tribunal, and Kingmaker hand your character crit multi, cast speed, and more from a single ally slot.
- Double-buff mercenaries (e.g. Fallen Reverend with Wrath/Zealotry/Battlemage’s Cry, Sniper with Grace+Haste) grant higher-level auras without eating your own reservation.
- Flexible: works as either a support that pumps your character or a merc-bot that does the heavy lifting, and the same warrant can be resold to other players.
- Access to layers your class may lack — scorch/sap/brittle from boot and shield bases, extra curses, and defensive tools like Kalandra’s Binding.
Cons
- Skill rolls are luck-dependent: movement skills brick the AI, and wrong secondary skills or brick supports (e.g. Brutality on an elemental merc) can gut damage.
- Some mercenaries hit like a truck when you fight them (Cruel Mistress’s Soulrend, physical-DoT casters), so they carry real risk.
- Optimizing gear, supports, and skill combinations is fiddly and largely unconfirmed until the league goes live.
Key Skills
- Mercenary primary/secondary skills — the merc’s damage engine; you want good secondaries (e.g. Kinetic Blast of Clustering on a Kineticist) and no conflicting or movement skills.
- Double auras (Wrath, Zealotry, Grace, Haste, Malevolence, Pride) — the core value for a support merc; stack aura effect to push them higher.
- War cries (Rallying Cry, Battlemage’s Cry) — flat damage and crit for your character; Swift Blade’s Rallying Cry is what made Facebreakers strong.
- Utility skills (Bastion, beacons, Transcendent Agility) — prefer passive-benefit utilities over movement skills.
Gear & Anointments
Gearing splits between what you put on the mercenary to buff yourself and what a campaign merc-bot needs to deal damage. For a support merc, the standout uniques mentioned are Perquil’s Toe, Mask of the Tribunal (fed attribute-heavy rares), and Kingmaker, alongside rares carrying aura effect, extra curses, and ailment sources. Anoints do work on mercenaries and can add war cry buff effect or aura effect. Remember the constraint of roughly two unique slots per merc, so the light-radius node is weighed against stronger unique multipliers.
- For a merc-bot, prioritize flat damage (flat lightning / elemental damage with attacks) on amulets, rings, weapons, gloves, plus increased damage on the belt.
- Fill remaining slots with life and resistances to keep the mercenary alive.
- Consider high-block or Heist-base shields to proc ailments, and defensive uniques like Kalandra’s Binding.
Exact item spellings and numbers are from the creator’s own notes and should be confirmed against the source video; specific uniques to be confirmed against the source video where uncertain.
Endgame Notes
Different mercenaries suit different content — some are best-in-slot clear, some (e.g. Blade Ambusher) are strong single-target for early boss rushing but fall off in maps, and armour-stacking single-target mercs shine when min-maxing. When buying a warrant, check the skills and, if possible, the support gems before purchasing, since supports make or break the merc. Good double-aura warrants can also be a resale opportunity for lightning casters and similar builds.
