Overview
This is an ignite-focused Flameblast setup on the Gemling Legionnaire, built around a staff for the main damage skill and a crossbow for Oil Grenade support. Rather than chasing hit damage, the whole package is tuned around ailment scaling — the creator reports roughly 5–8 million ignite DPS on a day-three character with plenty of headroom left in gear.
What separates it from a standard caster is the defensive shell. Iron Reflexes converts all evasion into armour, so armour-evasion hybrid bases count as pure armour pieces and the strength requirement problem largely disappears. Layered on top are Arctic Armour (amplified by Gemling’s bonus gem quality, reaching roughly 280% increased armour at full stages) and “armour applies to elemental damage” rolls on every armour slot. The creator sits at around 50k armour with almost no dedicated armour nodes allocated, and treats 70k as a realistic target once five-mod jewels are slotted.
The build also leans hard into rarity — around 208% at the time of recording — using gold-base rings and rarity suffixes wherever they do not cost a defensive layer, so juiced maps double as a currency engine.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Extremely tanky once armour stacking comes online — the creator reports only two deaths across a 20-hour session while running the game’s most juiced content
- Ignite scaling sidesteps the hit-damage arms race, so a modest tooltip does not translate into weak clears
- Gemling’s Gem Studded ascendancy grants crit immunity, a large survivability swing for high-juice mapping
- High rarity stacking turns mapping into a reliable currency source
- Damage still roughly doubles with obvious upgrades (+7 staff, five-mod jewels), so the ceiling is far from reached
Cons
- Mageblood is effectively mandatory — without it armour drops from ~53k to ~23k and the full-armour setup stops feeling good
- The Gem Studded setup requires a snapshot trick with two unset rings plus careful colour-balancing of unused support gems
- Ignite tooltips are inaccurate, making upgrade comparisons fiddly
- Not a starting build — the gear assumptions are firmly endgame
Key Skills
- Flameblast — the staff-based main damage skill; everything is scaled toward its ignite, not its hit
- Oil Grenade — crossbow skill that carries the ignite application; wants +1 cooldown and a base with an additional projectile
- Arctic Armour — the largest single armour multiplier via increased armour per stage, boosted by total gem quality
- Mana Remnants — optional spirit reservation purely for Catalytic Rejuvenation’s cooldown recovery on Oil Grenade
- Filler support gems (Seismic Cry, Shockwave Totem, Ice Shards and similar) — never cast; they exist only to balance support-gem colours for Gem Studded
Gear & Anointments
Weapon is a staff — the only meaningful upgrade axis is +7 to skill levels over +6, and crit damage is a dead stat here. The crossbow wants attack speed, +levels, and a base with an additional projectile, with two Spirit soul cores to make spirit requirements trivial. Mageblood is the enabler item, carrying Basalt + Granite (or Jade — identical under Iron Reflexes) plus a Gold flask for rarity.
Every armour piece should roll tier one or two “armour applies to elemental damage”; life, resistances and rarity fill the rest. Rings are gold-base with double rarity, resistances, increased fire damage and life. The amulet needs spirit plus quality of all skills; +3 spell skills is a nice-to-have but expensive. Quality sources stack from the Fox Idol’s bottom modifier, the amulet, the anoint, and Gemling itself for roughly 41% total.
Tree work is minimal — two clusters of “armour applies to elemental damage” (four points and three points) and very little else in the way of armour nodes.
Endgame Notes
The character is aimed squarely at the highest-juice mapping content, with the ignite ceiling handling pinnacle bosses. Next planned upgrades are five-mod jewels — for both increased armour and damage — and a +7 staff, which the creator expects to roughly double DPS toward 14 million.
