Overview
This build reworks the classic Archmage idea for the harder pinnacle content of patch 0.5, pairing Arc with a massive mana pool to turn lightning into a screen-clearing, boss-deleting engine. Rather than playing as a traditional energy shield recharge caster, it uses Eldritch Battery to convert energy shield into mana, then leans on Archmage to translate that giant mana pool into huge added lightning damage on every cast.
The defining twist is the defensive layer: damage is taken from mana before life, so instead of standing still waiting for an energy shield recharge between packs, the character relies on very high mana regeneration to stay topped up and safe. The result is a spell build that feels fast, recovers comfortably, and keeps its damage climbing through the toughest boss phases. Arc chains naturally between enemies, and the Scion’s Temper support widens each cast into an AoE-style pattern so packs evaporate on contact.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Effortless mapping — move forward, cast Arc, and let the chains wipe packs
- Strong single-target once the boss toolkit (Orb of Storms, Galvanic Field, Mana Tempest) is layered
- Damage-taken-from-mana-before-life plus high mana regen makes recovery very smooth
- Scales hard into 0.5 pinnacle content and dangerous boss combinations
- Chill and action-speed reduction from the ascendancy make hard fights easier to read
Cons
- Gear-gated: needs a strong galvanic wand (ideally +5 to lightning spell skills) and a full mana-before-life setup to feel safe
- Mana Tempest can drain your mana pool extremely fast if pressed carelessly
- Requires solving mana regen, spirit, and the mana-before-life threshold together — miss one piece and the build feels weak
- Not a cheap league-start project
Key Skills
- Arc — main skill; Scion’s Temper widens the clear, Considered Casting and crit supports scale the damage
- Orb of Storms — stationary single-target source placed before bosses and tanky rares
- Galvanic Field (granted by the wand) — another single-target damage stack; place it, don’t spam it
- Mana Tempest — high-risk burst button, used only when a boss is vulnerable
- Archmage — the core engine converting the mana pool into added lightning damage
Gear & Anointments
The centerpiece is a strong galvanic wand with +levels to lightning spell skills (aim for +5), plus mana, cast speed and increased lightning damage; a Rune of the Wisdom adds another spell level. Body armour is the key defensive piece — you need enough damage-taken-from-mana-before-life (from the implacable/desecrated mods and Rune of the Willpower) to reach full conversion. Amulet wants +spell levels, cast speed, mana and spirit, with a Lightning Rod for lucky lightning damage. Mental Perseverance is mandatory somewhere (jewel or tree), and Heart of the Veil jewels are especially strong for damage gained as lightning plus mana cast efficiency. On the tree, prioritise maximum mana, mana regen, mana cast efficiency, intelligence, lightning damage and penetration, shock effect and spell crit. Ascendancy is Stormweaver: Cast in Gale for permanent Arcane Surge uptime, Suffuse for the mana-before-life scaling, and Shaper of the Winter plus Heavy Snows to chill everything (including bosses) for defensive value.
Endgame Notes
Once every piece is online — the mana-before-life conversion, the mana regen and the spirit requirements — the build becomes a screen-clearing spell, a boss-killing machine and a defensive engine at the same time, comfortably handling 0.5’s harder pinnacle encounters.
