Overview
This build turns the Witch into a chaos damage-over-time turret, leaning on Dark Effigy as its centerpiece. The totem fires additional chaos projectiles for every chaos DoT debuff sitting on a target, so the whole build is designed to layer as many debuffs as possible — Contagion, Essence Drain, Poison, Wither and a curse — then let cast speed multiply the projectile count until the screen fills with purple. It is a deliberately cheap, league-start-friendly setup that runs the exact same core skills from Act 1 into the deepest end game without ever changing its identity.
The playstyle is intentionally low-friction for clearing: place Dark Effigy, spread Contagion as you move, and weave in Essence Drain against tankier packs or around awkward corners the totem can’t reach. The single-target ceiling comes from stacking everything at once — Sigil of Power, Despair, two Effigy totems, Essence Drain and Contagion, with Mana Tempest as a burst window. On the defensive side the build is built entirely around energy shield with an energy-shield-leech package, which makes it noticeably tankier than a typical caster.
The one honest weakness is a slight delay on totem damage ramp; until your debuffs and cast speed are online the first second of a fight feels soft. Once those are rolling, the downside largely disappears and damage scales into the millions through cast speed and jewels.

Gear & Anointments
The weapon is a wand prioritizing +levels of (chaos) spell skills, then cast speed, then chaos and spell damage. The focus is the most important slot — the desecrated +1 maximum summoned totems modifier is the top priority, followed by +spell skills, cast speed and energy shield. Helmet is the Adze of Bane for the leech package; body armour is a high-energy-shield chest (Enlightened/Loving/Sacramental/Arcane Robe base), with a budget alternative built around a Waveshaper chest into greater iron rings. Amulet wants +spell skill levels and at least 24 spirit if you run Clarity. Jewels prioritize increased effect of Withered (aim for 40%+ total since it works in 20% breakpoints), then energy shield, chaos/spell damage and faster recharge.
Endgame Notes
End-game scaling leans hard into energy shield and cast speed, since cast speed directly multiplies Dark Effigy’s projectile output. If you can reach 144 spirit you can add Ravenous Swarm, drop Poison, and slot the rapid-casting tree for a large damage jump. Witch’s ascendancy package here — Eldritch Power (30% more damage for a little ES), Solstice Form, Eternal Life and Crystallized Faith Decree — combines with the tree and Adze of the Stain to delete a large portion of incoming bypass damage while energy shield is up. Infernalist is a viable alternative if you prefer a crit/spirit-stacking variant with more totems.
