Overview

The Zookeeper turns the new Spirit Walker ascendancy into a real companion-driven endgame build. Instead of using minions as small support tools, this setup taps Natural Order’s unique boss-taming and scales one captured beast with stacked rare companions, debuffs, and presence auras. Your job is to position, mark targets, and keep your buffs alive while a pack of monsters does the actual killing.

The leveling phase is a completely different character. The build levels fast with Twister plus Whirling Slash, abusing chilled ground from Frost Nexus and Fang of Frost setups so the twisters hit much harder. The Tame Beast gem is available at level 7, but the creator strongly recommends waiting until around act three after the second lab — earlier than that and you do not have enough passive points, spirit, or companion scaling for the swap to feel good.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Genuinely novel playstyle — you command a unique boss as your main weapon, not another projectile or caster setup
  • Twister leveling is fast and smooth through the campaign with no respec pain at the act-three swap
  • Bear Companion brings Intimidate, which doubles as boss damage reduction for safer fights
  • Cat’s Balance lets main-hand weapon damage feed your companion, opening up rare scepters or high-physical maces as scaling sources

Cons

  • Still experimental — Spirit Walker and unique boss taming are brand new in 0.5, and the creator openly says the build is being tested and tuned
  • Wants enough spirit + passive points to host multiple companions, so the swap window is gated to act three
  • Chaos resistance matters because you stay close enough for presence auras to land, which is an extra resist axis to manage
  • Identity is endgame companion scaling; not a true league-start because the payoff lands after the second lab

Key Skills

  • Twister (with Retreat, Frost Nexus, Elemental Armament) — primary leveling damage, interacts with ground effects
  • Whirling Slash (Rage, Rapid Attacks) — fast twister trigger for early acts
  • Tame Beast — captures the unique boss companion that becomes your main damage; do not swap before act three
  • Bear Companion (via Wild Protector) — Intimidate uptime and front-line defensive pressure
  • War Banner + Freezing Mark + Ice Trap Arrows + Barrage — supporting tools for damage taken and burst windows

Gear & Anointments

During the twister phase, flat added damage on spear, gloves, and rings is the main priority — this is what makes the early acts feel smooth before the companion transition. Once Spirit Walker is online, the build pivots: companion damage, companion attack speed, minion/companion gem levels, and weapon damage (for Cat’s Balance) take over. A rare scepter is a strong main hand because it can roll companion modifiers, spirit, and aura support.

Defensively the order is life early, then evasion, then deflection, then energy shield, with capped resistances and meaningful chaos resistance because of presence-aura range. Hybrid evasion + energy shield bases are the early-to-mid choice, with potential late pivots into heavier energy shield investment. Look for rare beasts with mods like Haste Aura or Trail of the Lightning to layer on top of the main tame beast.

Specific unique recommendations should be confirmed against the linked planner — the creator updates it daily as the build evolves.

Endgame Notes

Ascendancy order: Natural Order (unique boss taming — the reason the build exists), Wild Protector (Bear Companion + Intimidate), Cat’s Balance (weapon damage → companion damage), Idolatry (companion damage + reservation efficiency). Late-tree targets include captivating companionship for damage redirection, From Nothing jewels, defensive clusters, and the companion damage nodes around the Druid/Huntress side of the tree.

Against bosses, the companion attacks while you keep up debuffs and uptime. In maps it should feel like running behind a pack of monsters that work for you.
