Overview
Grenades remain one of the smoothest levelling packages in Path of Exile 2, and pairing them with Gemling Legionnaire turns that early-game comfort into a build that keeps pace all the way to the Arbiter of Divinity. The ascendancy’s gem-quality and gem-level bonuses land directly on the grenade skills that carry the build, so every point of progression translates into more projectiles, faster detonations and cheaper skill costs rather than a stat sheet that only matters later.
The build was taken from level one to the Arbiter in solo self-found, which is the strongest argument for it as a league starter for the boss-heavy Forbidden Rites event. Nothing in the core setup is gated behind a unique, so a fresh character can follow the plan without trade access and still end the campaign with real single-target damage and a genuinely tanky defensive base.
It also makes a good springboard. Because the currency floor is so low, this is a character that funds a more expensive or more experimental reroll later in the event rather than one you feel locked into.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Fully SSF viable — no required uniques anywhere in the core plan
- Explosive Grenade is strong from the opening acts, so levelling never feels like a chore
- Essence of Virtue converts skill-gem attribute requirements into life and defences, which solves campaign survivability almost single-handedly
- Excellent single-target once Cluster Grenade is quality-boosted into an instant shotgun
- Cheap enough that rerolling into a pricier build later costs you nothing
Cons
- Mana sustain is rough until the final ascendancy point lands — flask upgrades are mandatory until then
- Gem Cutter’s Prisms are the real bottleneck; Advanced Theory only shines once you have enough of them
- Reaching the full power spike requires the Brutus’ Brain lineage support, which is a later-league acquisition
Key Skills
- Explosive Grenade — the foundation and main clear skill; quality grants two extra projectiles
- Cluster Grenade — boss damage; enough quality reduces detonation time until it instantly shotguns single targets
- Gas Grenade — added fire damage layer for tougher packs and bosses
- Flash Grenade — crowd control plus supplementary damage
- Barrage Archer — linked to Cluster Grenade from Act 4 onward to smooth out clear speed; quality grants it large reservation efficiency
Gear & Anointments
The weapon of choice is a Cannonade crossbow, which combines with quality-granted projectiles so Explosive Grenade fires four grenades without needing Multishot. Beyond that, the campaign shopping list is simply flat damage to attacks on gloves and rings plus regular weapon upgrades — no unique is required to make the build function.
For the endgame, the Decree of Acuity helmet is a common Arbiter of Divinity drop and adds meaningful avoidance and mitigation on top of the armour and evasion the ascendancy already scales. The Brutus’ Brain lineage support linked to Pounce is the single largest single-target upgrade available: Predator’s Mark from Pounce increases the damage an enemy takes based on nearby enemy count, and quality on Pounce keeps several wolves active at once.
Ascendancy order runs Essence of Virtue first for campaign defences, then Implanted Gems for +2 levels to your skills, then Advanced Theory once you have the Gem Cutter’s Prisms to exploit it, and finally Gem Studded for effective critical-hit immunity, reduced movement penalty while using skills and 30% less skill cost.
Endgame Notes
The build is built to reach the Arbiter of Divinity, which matters more than usual this patch since only two Arbiter kills are needed for most Atlas points. Gem Studded is also the mana fix — once it is allocated, sustain stops being a consideration.
