Overview
This is Pohx’s 0.5 league-start project: a Permafrost + Fragmentation Rounds Witchhunter that he ran exclusively in SSF the prior league and is bringing back with light tuning. The engine is simple to describe and surprisingly nuanced to play — Permafrost on left click freezes packs, Fragmentation Rounds on right click consumes the freeze for a giant detonation. Both skills are available from level one, so the bar barely changes from the campaign through endgame.
The headline tech is a two-set weapon swap routed through left and right click so you alternate sets without ever stopping to reload. Eternal Rage sits on set one, Berserk and Shard Scavenger on set two; the swap also gates degen so it only ticks while you’re firing frag rounds. The 0.5 patch removed Eternal Rage in both sets, but a new Eternal Rage amulet base type covers the gap. Constricting Command is still the unique that glues the tree together, opening up the surrounding cluster nodes — Pohx flags it as the one chase piece even fresh league starters should hunt down.
In maps the build leans on bolt ricochet for free AoE — hallways and walls effectively double your damage — plus chilled-ground immunity from the bottom of the tree. Bosses use a short rotation: Freezing Mark, Thunderstorm (the streamer slip called it ‘Under Storm’), Permafrost to freeze, then Fragmentation Rounds to detonate and proc Shard Scavenger for free follow-up shots.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Skills are usable from level one, so the bar you start with is the bar you finish with
- Strong SSF resume — Pohx took the same shell to endgame solo last league
- Ricochet off walls is a huge multiplier on tighter map layouts
- Built-in chilled-ground immunity from the lower passive cluster
- Boss rotation is short and readable: mark, freeze, detonate, hold left click for free shots
Cons
- Acts 1 and 2 are admittedly slow; the build only clicks once Act 3 gear comes online
- Weapon-swap tech has to be re-bound every time you die in the campaign
- Hinges on Constricting Command and the new Eternal Rage amulet base to feel complete
- Defences are modest — evasion plus sword cord, not a layered fortress
Key Skills
- Permafrost — left-click spray that freezes packs; wants projectile speed badly to feel tight
- Fragmentation Rounds — right-click detonator that consumes freezes for the big hit; ramps with Elemental Armament, Concentrated Effect, Deliberation
- Freezing Mark — single-target multiplier with Prolonged Duration; tap before bosses
- Thunderstorm — boss-phase fire damage layer that buffs the frag detonation
- Herald of Ice — clear AoE; pair Magnified Area + Cold Attunement, optionally lock to set one so Wind Dancer fits on set two
- Shard Scavenger — free shots on freeze consumption; the reason you can hold left click after a detonation
Gear & Anointments
One crossbow can cover both weapon sets — lock it into both slots and you only need a single weapon for the whole character. Pohx’s SSF endgame piece is high but not exceptional (no attack speed), which is a useful expectations check: damage scales hard with crossbow attack speed, reload speed, and projectile speed, in that order, for the Permafrost side. The Frag Rounds side leans on raw weapon damage and penetration, picked up later via Rakiata’s Flow if you find one.
- Weapon — single crossbow locked to both sets; prioritise attack speed, reload speed, projectile speed for Permafrost, with raw phys for Frag
- Amulet — new Eternal Rage base type in 0.5 (no longer needs to be on both sets); Yoke of Suffering on trade is the chase
- Body Armour — evasion chest piece; Constricting Command is the unique enabler when you find one
- Defences — sword cord stacking from Witchhunter ascendancy plus the bottom-tree chilled-ground immunity cluster
For ascendancy nodes, Pohx levels as Tactician for the supporting fire node and respecs to Witchhunter in the second lab. End-tree picks split by content — No Mercy and Witchbane for bossing, Zealous Inquisition (10% chance to explode) and Culling Strike for mapping. A cheap respec swaps between modes.
Endgame Notes
Path the tree by funnelling down to Rapid Reload first — that’s the inflection where the build stops feeling sluggish. Then sweep through Abundant Avatar, Spray and Pray, and the reload/ammunition cluster (30% chance not to expend ammo, 30% chance for instant reload). Projectile speed nodes on the upper tree are A-plus-plus-plus for Permafrost feel and are worth respeccing into mid-progression.
Weapon-set splitting matters: skill effect duration on set two boosts Shard Scavenger and Freezing Mark, while attack speed, reload speed, projectile speed, immobilisation buildup, and intimidation belong on set one. Intimidation in particular snapshots bonus damage onto your frag detonation. The build handles every league mechanic comfortably except Ritual (spooky on a weak sword cord roll) and Delirium (no corpses to explode).
