Overview
This build takes a familiar Ice Shot and Snipe bow package and moves it onto Mercenary specifically for what Witchhunter’s Zealous Inquisition brings to early farming: a 10% chance to explode monsters on kill, doubled against undead and demons. That last detail is the whole argument. Abyss and Breach — two of the mechanics you most want to be farming in the first week — are populated almost entirely by demons, which makes them dramatically easier to run on bad gear here than on any other ascendancy.
The second pillar is the weapon-set passive system. Attacks live on weapon set one and debuffs on weapon set two, and the large pool of weapon-set-specific points carries both clear and single-target damage through the early game even when the gear is genuinely terrible. All the footage the creator shows is from early Atlas progression in T15 maps and against pinnacle bosses on a solo self-found character.
The creator’s own definition of a league starter is a build that reaches level one to Arbiter of Divinity and farms T15 maps without significant investment, and this is engineered squarely to that spec — with the explicit intent that you bank currency here and then swap into something more expensive later.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Explode carries early clear and trivialises Abyss and Breach farming on minimal gear
- Strong early single-target from the stacked debuffs that the weapon-set passives amplify
- SSF viable and functional on any budget
- Scales well with investment despite being designed as a starter
- Comes with a detailed build file containing level-gated trees, gem setups and gear tooltips
Cons
- Requires aiming, and Snipe needs good timing — bosses that teleport or jump take longer to freeze and debuff
- The passive tree is complicated, with weapon-set passives that must be assigned correctly to work at all
- A current game bug stops passives updating on ascend or level up; you have to reload the build file or relog
- The tree reconfigures at levels 38 and 65, so it needs attention rather than being set-and-forget
Key Skills
- Ice Shot — the main clear skill from the start of Act 3 onward, supported with Elemental Armament, Rapid Attacks, Ice Bite and Fork
- Snipe — single target; benefits from the Ice Bite damage triggered by Ice Shot’s freeze
- Lightning Arrow / Lightning Rod — the Act 1–2 damage package before the cold swap
- Frost Bomb & Freezing Mark (with Charged Mark) — the weapon-set-two debuff package; Charged Mark shocks the target on freeze and raises shock magnitude
- Tornado Shot — added around level 60 for extra projectile damage against tanky packs and bosses
- Escape Shot — mobility, best set to attack without moving
Gear & Anointments
Start with a Ranger mule at level one for the bow and — more importantly — the quiver, plus a guaranteed Lightning Arrow. Assign the bow and quiver to both weapon sets immediately and start using weapon sets as early as possible.
Damage-type priority shifts through the campaign: added cold damage and glacial runes in Acts 1–2 so you can still freeze bosses like Count Geonor for Snipe, then added lightning damage and lightning runes in Acts 3–4 once you have swapped to Ice Shot for shock. After the campaign, extra arrows become the priority — one comes from the passive tree, and you want to reach two or three total from bow, quiver or runes as fast as possible. Critical strike chance and damage matter less before level 90; a decent bow and projectile count come first.
Run at least one unset ring in the endgame to fit all the recommended skills. For the amulet anoint, Serrated Edges is a cheap and effective early pick, or anything granting freeze buildup. Flask upgrades during levelling are treated as a core defensive layer rather than an afterthought. Charms follow the acts: Sapphire in Act 1, Topaz in Act 2 for Jamanra, Antidote in Act 3 for the viper fight, then the standard Stone, Thawing and Silver combo from Act 4 to counter immobilising effects.
Around level 38 the extra Spirit allows Tame Beast — the creator recommends a boar from the Barrens shop with Haste or Haste Aura, and specifically warns off the rolling armadillo and anything that spams environmental effects that clutter the screen.
Endgame Notes
The build reaches Arbiter of Divinity and farms T15 maps without significant investment, which is the stated design goal. Because so many endgame builds live on other ascendancies, the intended arc is to farm here, save currency, and reroll into a build with a higher entry cost.
