Overview
This is a 0.5 refresh of the long-running Contagion + Essence Drain caster starter, repackaged around the Witch’s Lich ascendancy and with a Bonestorm physical-spell layer slotted in for single-target. The core loop has not changed: throw Contagion onto a pack, fire Essence Drain into one target to seed the chaos DoT, watch the infection cascade across the screen as enemies pop. What the patch adds is reliable early single-target through Entangle from level one, faster boss windows via Bonestorm on a dedicated physical weapon set, and an optional late-campaign Orb of Storms + Living Lightning trigger setup for impale stacks.
The build is pitched as a caster league starter rather than a do-everything build. Lich gives the cleanest defensive line through Soulless Form and Eternal Life, but the same skill plan plays on Bloodmage (leech) or Infernalist (Demon Form for the fastest campaign clear). It targets a no-gear fresh-league environment and assumes nothing more exotic than a +1 spell skills wand off a vendor.

Cons
- DoT-spread playstyle has a noticeable “first-pack” tax: you need to seed before things die
- Two-weapon-set management adds a fiddly habit to early campaign play
- Creator explicitly flags that you may want to swap builds for endgame mapping \u2014 this is a leveling specialist, not an all-rounder
- Bonestorm pairs awkwardly with elemental rolls on wands; Brutality support can downgrade your stat-stick if you’re not careful

Gear & Anointments
The whole build leans on a single weapon stat: +1 to level of all spell skills, with +1 to level of all chaos skills as a strong second priority and flat spell damage filling in behind those. Wand or sceptre both work \u2014 whichever you can vendor-roll. Focus mirrors the same priority. Around level 11 the build switches to two weapon sets: set 1 stays caster-stat (your Contagion / ED), set 2 swaps to physical bases for Bonestorm and Entangle so the physical damage scales independently. Lock the sets so weapon swap doesn’t desync. Body / boots / rings stay basic \u2014 armour and energy shield for survival, movement speed on boots is non-negotiable. Specific uniques are not required and the creator does not call any out.
Spirit reservation: Ravenous Swarm is the recommended first spirit gem, paired with Corrosion support to apply poison-as-armour-break against bosses. Withering Presence is the alternative if you can’t hit the dexterity for Corrosion early.
Support priority by rough order: Unleash on Contagion, Swift Affliction on Essence Drain, Considered Casting once available, Corrosion / Brutality on Bonestorm for boss windows. Brutality is fine as an early Bonestorm support but remember it zeros out any elemental rolls on your stat-stick.
Endgame Notes
This is explicitly a campaign / leveling specialist. The creator suggests keeping Bonestorm into early maps if your single-target still feels weak, but says most players will either commit to a different build for endgame or accept that pure ED + Contagion needs supplementary scaling (weapon-swap spell circles, Dark Effigy totems) to push deep into the Atlas. Treat this as the build that gets you to maps cleanly, not the one you take to pinnacle bosses.
Ascendancy Notes
- Lich (recommended): Soulless Form first, then Eternal Life, free pick afterwards. Best defensive line if you’re running leech.
- Bloodmage: take the leech node and play it straight \u2014 simplest path.
- Infernalist: Demonic Possession for Demon Form is the fastest-leveling option; you don’t even need Master of Darkness to feel a damage spike.
