Overview

Gemling Legionnaire is the ascendancy this build is built to exploit: its access to alternative gem qualities via Advanced Thaumaturgy is what makes the whole plan work. At its core this is a grenade build, but the design goal is narrower than “clear everything” — it is a cheap, fast league opener meant to cruise the campaign, rush the Atlas, bank all the Atlas points, and bankroll whatever real endgame build you actually want to play afterwards.

The speed half of the build comes from an unusual source. Cast on Dodge is socketed purely for its alternative quality, which grants dodge roll distance. Stacked with the Surefooted Sigil, a socket ball, Victory of Flight and the movement nodes on the weapon swap, a single roll covers most of a screen — traversal the creator rates as second only to Temporalis. Wolf form supplies another 30% movement speed while not sprinting, and since dodge rolling beats sprinting outright, you simply hold the dodge key and move.

The damage half is Cluster Grenades. Between alternative quality, the tree and Volatile Grenades the build pushes past 100% reduced detonation time, so cluster grenades explode instantly and shotgun a boss in a single tap. Against bosses you armour-break first with Shred in wolf form and a Rune of Disintegration, then drop the grenades. There are two easily-respecced variants: a rush-the-Atlas configuration built around movement, and a juice-the-maps configuration that trades boots and sigil for Eternal Rage and proper clear setups.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Explicitly designed for a fresh league — no trade dependency early, gear requirements are modest
  • Screen-length dodge rolls make Atlas progression genuinely fast
  • Cluster Grenades one-tap map bosses and handle pinnacle targets like Elder Bash and Divinity
  • Two variants that respec between each other cheaply — rush mode and juice mode
  • Gemling Legionnaire’s alternative qualities mean most of the power comes from gems, not expensive items

Cons

  • Cluster Grenades unlock at level 52 and carry a 10-second cooldown, so other grenade skills must fill the gaps
  • Constricting Command and a Rune Forged Brass Dome are the natural upgrades and will likely be expensive in the first days of a league
  • Depends on gem colour prisms and quality breakpoints — you have to plan campaign resources rather than just picking up gear
  • The creator frames it as a stepping stone that funds a real endgame build, not as a permanent endgame home
  • Some of the plan assumes league mechanic rewards from previous patches carry into 0.5.5, which is unconfirmed

Key Skills

  • Cluster Grenades — the primary skill from level 52 for both clear and single target; feed it every colour prism you bank in campaign
  • Explosive Grenades — the campaign workhorse for clear and boss damage, and a strong clear option again later via its alternative quality
  • Gas Grenades — added at level 14 specifically for boss damage
  • Cast on Dodge — socketed only for the alternative quality that grants dodge roll distance
  • Shred (wolf form) — the fast basic attack used to apply armour break before the grenade dump

Gear & Anointments

Gear priorities split by which variant you are running. In rush mode the Surefooted Sigil and dodge-distance sources matter more than raw stats; in juice mode you swap to movement speed boots and an amulet.

  • Surefooted Sigil — an extra metre of dodge roll distance, core to the rush variant
  • Constricting Command and a Rune Forged Brass Dome — the two aspirational items; before you own them, skip the surround clusters and Last Stand and take Heavy Ammunition, Careful Aim and cooldown recovery instead
  • Rune of Disintegration — armour break scaled off runic ward; roughly 500 ward is enough to break most boss armour even without Brass Dome, so rune forge everything you own
  • Concussive Runes — a Calgor support from Veridian Remnants starting in act 4 that roughly doubles Flash Grenade damage
  • Amulet — a plus three to all projectile skills base with an open suffix, then desecrate with Curse of the Grave chasing quality of all skills; expect several attempts
  • Tree-side, take the reduced detonation time nodes as soon as Cluster Grenades come online, and spec Molten One’s Gift so both physical and fire damage benefit from broken armour.

Endgame Notes

Ascend early in maps, once cluster grenades and Cast on Dodge are both at 20% quality, and take two points per floor. Advanced Thaumaturgy is the priority node since it unlocks the alternative qualities the build is built on. Once the Atlas is finished, drop Cast on Dodge and Herald of Ash, use a Mystic Alloy for 13 or more spirit, and run Eternal Rage with Remnants of Calgor and Katal’s Rejuvenation — the cooldown recovery lets the better grenades come up more often.
