Overview

This Flameblast starter for the Forbidden Rites league runs on the Mercenary’s Gemling Legionnaire. It uses a newer Gemling node that gives skill gems extra quality. Flameblast gains more damage per stage for each point of quality, and it has ten stages. With well-qualitied gems, a full channel builds a very large damage multiplier.

The build keeps its skill list short. Flameblast is the main channelled spell, and Oil Grenade adds area coverage and ignite support. The passive tree is built for spell and ignite damage, then heads to Chaos Inoculation. The creator considered a keystone-based version but chose the simpler damage setup for the first days of the league. It’s cheaper, and the gems are easier to find early.

Pros & Cons

Pros

• Flameblast gets a very large multiplier once gem quality stacks up on Gemling
• The skill setup is simple, with few buttons to manage
• It’s cheap to start and scales as better gems and gear come in
• Mapping is decent, and the damage is strong during early endgame

Cons

• It clears more slowly than the top meta mappers such as Ice Shot
• Gemling gem quality is hard to get on day one, so damage ramps up over time
• Fire traps in the Trial of the Sekhemas can be deadly: the creator saw ignite get through their protection, and they recommend a relic that makes you immune to trap damage
• The creator suggests levelling through the campaign on a different, faster build and switching later

Gear focuses on spell damage and on getting enough spirit for the support setup. The weapon slot takes a staff or a wand with a focus, whichever you find.
