Overview
This build turns the crossbow into a lightning shotgun, using Galvanic Shards to shred maps and swapping into Shock Burst Rounds for single-target on bosses. It is built on the Mercenary’s Witch Hunter, which in 0.5 became a top-tier defensive ascendancy thanks to changes to Sorcery Ward — with enough evasion the ward reaches enormous values and recharges whenever you stop taking hits, making you extremely hard to kill against normal damage.
The design splits cleanly into two weapon-set setups so there is no clunky combo swapping: Galvanic Shards (with fork and pierce) for wide, smooth clear, and Shock Burst Rounds for bosses. Shock Burst needs a shocked target to do its real damage, and on the high-budget version this is fully automated through Cast on Critical + Thunderstorm + Shock Conduction — Thunderstorm drenches, Shock Conduction shocks the drenched target, and you simply hold the trigger. On lower budgets you cast Thunderstorm manually before bursting the boss down. The creator frames it as one of the most fun and highest-damage Galvanic Shards setups in 0.5, scaling into millions of DPS.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Dedicated clear (Galvanic Shards) and boss (Shock Burst Rounds) setups, no awkward combos
- Sorcery Ward + heavy evasion makes the Witch Hunter feel S-tier defensively against hits
- Witch Hunter explosion package excels in Abyss and dense pack content
- Shock automation via Cast on Critical removes manual upkeep on the high-budget version
- Crossbow playstyle stays fun and engaging while doing serious damage
Cons
- Damage over time (especially ignite) is the main weakness — needs Crystallized Immunities and sustain investment
- The fully-automated crit version is spirit-hungry (~190 spirit) and gear-gated
- Requires mana leech to keep casting Thunderstorm from Cast on Critical
- Weapon-set configuration must be set up carefully before it feels smooth
Key Skills
- Galvanic Shards — primary mapping skill; fork + pierce + double barrel for wide clear
- Shock Burst Rounds — boss-killer that detonates shocked targets
- Thunderstorm (Cast on Critical) — automates drench + shock application on the high-budget version
- Wind Dancer — defensive layer feeding the not-hit-recently evasion scaling
- Emergency Reload — burst-reload to fire Shock Burst Rounds on demand
Gear & Anointments
The crossbow is the most important slot — a fast base with levels to projectile/attack skills, crit chance and strong damage; a budget plus-five-skills-on-Onslaught crossbow still works. Use a solar amulet with tier-one spirit and projectile levels. Stack evasion across the tree and gear to scale Sorcery Ward, pairing it with Ghost Dance and Wind Dancer. Careful Consideration can be anointed for a large not-hit-recently evasion boost. High-budget jewels use Adorn-style scaling (rare sapphire/emerald for evasion, ES, crit). Mana leech on gloves or rings is essential.
Endgame Notes
The build is designed to scale in tiers — a cheap explosive setup, a medium manual-Thunderstorm version, then the high-budget automated crit version reaching millions of DPS. Crystallized Immunities and life-on-kill/leech are called out as the fixes that turn the Witch Hunter from fragile-to-DoT into nearly unkillable.
