Overview
This is a Gemling Legionnaire league-start plan built around Shield Wall and a bleed-to-poison damage conversion. The character opens the campaign as a straightforward bleed-and-mace attacker, then pivots into full chaos-over-time stacking once the gear and passive investment are in place. The 0.5.5 change that pushes Soulcore of Takati to 25% increased poison magnitude is the specific patch hook the creator points at as the reason poison is worth committing to this patch.
The identity of the build is durability first, damage second. It runs a hybrid armour/evasion setup with a large shield and a very large effective hit pool, then leans on ailments rather than raw hit damage to kill. The stated long-term goal is farming Trial of Chaos on repeat, so the endgame tree is shaped around surviving sustained chaos-damage pressure rather than around clear speed.
Gemling is a deliberate trade-off. It does not get the cheap early damage clusters that Warrior-side characters can path into, so early progression is gear-dependent and the leveling tree has to buy its damage the hard way.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Very high effective hit pool from a stacked hybrid armour + evasion + block setup, even before any chase uniques
- Poison scaling has a direct 0.5.5 buff via Soulcore of Takati, so the damage plan is patch-current rather than inherited from last league
- Works as an SSF league start — the creator’s own run was SSF and cleared the campaign without traded gear
- Shield Wall plus Resonating Shield gives a self-sufficient clear-and-block loop that comes online early in Act 2
- The weapon-swap warcry trick adds a meaningful damage burst without needing extra gear
Cons
- Gemling has a genuine early-damage hole; Act 2 was a damage wall until Cruel Methods was picked up
- Damage is dot-based, so it kills on a delay rather than instantly, and clearing feels slower than a hit-based build
- The endgame tree is not tuned yet; the creator explicitly calls it a template that still needs optimisation
- Several endgame gem combinations, including the Ice Fang Orbit interaction and Corrosion with Wind Dancer, are untested theory rather than confirmed results
Key Skills
- Shield Wall — main damage skill, supported with Bloodletting, Heft, Admixture and Deadly Poison so low hits still apply long poisons
- Resonating Shield — the mobile clear tool, run with Bleed, Heft, Rage and Rapid Attacks for rage generation and attack speed
- Bone Shatter / Mace Strike — early-campaign filler before Shield Wall unlocks
- Herald of Blood + Herald of Plague — the pop-and-spread package; Escalating Poison and Bursting Plague drive the on-screen chain
- Fortifying Cry / Infernal Cry — defensive uptime plus the warcry that fires off the weapon swap
Gear & Anointments
One-handed maces are the recommended weapon base because they are cheap and easy to gear on league start. The creator notes that ailment and ailment magnitude mods beat “damage against fully broken armour” for this build. A structured hammer for daze-on-hit and a Soulcore of Takati socket for the 25% chaos damage-over-time magnitude are the two specific weapon targets.
- Big shield and big helm; hybrid armour/evasion bases through gloves, boots and amulet
- Amulet anoint: Leeching Toxins, for poison magnitude
- Body armour: Mora Invictus, chosen for defensive stats and a roughly 5,000 life pool
- Long-term chase: Mageblood appears in the template POB, plus a Palma the Dreamer poison variant for Gloom Shrine. Both are optional and the build functions without them.
Endgame Notes
The tree runs two branches: down through Feel No Pain into the Knight of Tarkatis and Azshara armour/threshold clusters for deflective armour, and across to Spiked Shield for the Deterioration damage-over-time nodes plus the fast-acting poison cluster (Intense Dose, Multi-Stack Poisons). Iron Reflexes is reachable and would give roughly 73,000 armour, but costs too much survivability elsewhere to be worth taking as configured. The intended farm target is Trial of Chaos.
