Overview
This Chronomancer plays cold as a control tool first and a damage type second. Walking into a pack and casting Ice Nova freezes everything in range, and frozen enemies simply do not get to act — rares stop moving, bosses become readable, and the danger of a pull evaporates before the damage even resolves. Freeze here is simultaneously the offence and the defensive layer, which is why the build feels stable well before the gear is finished.
The damage engine runs on cold infusion. Ice Nova is the clear button, Siphon Elements and Snap generate the infusions that keep the cold-infused version of Ice Nova active, and Cast on Elemental Ailment layers automated Comet explosions on top. For anything that survives the first cast, Frost Bomb applies exposure and turns a tanky rare into an ordinary one. Spellcasters received meaningful buffs in 0.5, and the new cold and runic spell options give this template more room to scale than earlier iterations had.
Chronomancer adds a second control layer over the top. Apex of the Moment compounds the slowing the build already applies, Quicksand Hourglass creates the burst windows for boss setups, and Now and Again shaves cooldowns across a kit that is unusually cooldown-dependent — Frost Bomb, Frost Wall, Snap, and Sigil of Power all benefit directly.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Freeze lockdown functions as a defensive layer, so the character survives situations that would kill a comparable glass-cannon caster
- Excellent mapping — Ice Nova covers a large area and clears packs without any setup
- Works on relatively cheap gear; the creator notes it reaches pinnacle bosses without a finished build
- Genuinely playable through progression: level with Essence Drain and Contagion or Bonestorm, then swap into cold spells once spirit allows
- Frost Bomb exposure gives a clean answer to tanky rares that do not die to the first Ice Nova
Cons
- Self-cast means mana sustain is load-bearing; skipping mana cast efficiency and regeneration nodes makes long maps and boss fights miserable
- Ice Nova wants you close enough for its area to cover the pack, which puts a caster in melee range
- Single target requires a deliberate multi-skill rotation rather than sustained damage
- Alpha’s Howl carries a large chunk of the spirit budget, and the reservation setup is awkward before you can afford it
- Fragile early — Time Freeze is taken first specifically to patch that window
Key Skills
- Ice Nova — the main clear skill and the freeze applicator the whole build revolves around
- Frost Wall — the real single-target tool; Spell Cascade creates additional walls and Cooldown Recovery keeps it available
- Frost Bomb — exposure for tanky rares and bosses, massively improving cold damage taken
- Cast on Elemental Ailment — automated Comet explosions triggered by the ailments already being applied
- Snap / Siphon Elements — the infusion engine that keeps cold-infused Ice Nova running
Gear & Anointments
The staff comes first, and plus levels to cold spell skills (or all spell skills) is the stat that matters most. After that, look for increased cold damage, spell damage, spell crit chance, spell crit damage bonus, and ideally damage gained as extra lightning so the build can shock.
- Helmet — Alpha’s Howl is the strong option for the large spirit pool it provides, which is what fits Cast on Elemental Ailment alongside the rest of the reservations; a rare energy-shield or ward helmet with life and resistances works until then
- Amulet — plus three to spell skills or cold spell skills, spirit, cast speed, crit chance and crit bonus, plus life and mana
- Body armour — Forge Grasping Mail or a strong Void base, ideally the strength/dexterity/intelligence outcome, upgraded further through rune forging; wants life, spirit, and resistances
- Gloves and boots — Siren Scale Gloves and Sekhema Sandals bases, looking for life, mana, resistances, movement speed on boots, and crit damage where possible
- Belt — Darkness Enthroned if you have a strong charm setup, otherwise a rare with life, mana, and resistances is entirely fine
- Rings — life, resistances, mana, mana regeneration, and rarity if it fits
- Charms — cover the dangerous map affixes: slows, ignites, and stuns
Endgame Notes
Ascendancy order is Time Freeze, Apex of the Moment, Quicksand Hourglass, and Now and Again. The boss rotation is deliberate: open with Sigil of Power, apply Elemental Weakness, drop Frost Bomb, then alternate Frost Wall and Ice Nova while refreshing Frost Bomb on cooldown and keeping the curse and exposure up. Weapon set one carries exposure, crit, spell damage, and cold scaling for the main kit; weapon set two is dedicated to curse effect, giving Elemental Weakness stronger magnitude and duration for boss setups. Time-Lost Sapphire jewels are strong when placed where they can boost notables carrying crit damage or spell crit damage.
