Overview

Culling Strike is an execute mechanic: any hit that leaves an enemy at or below a threshold percentage of life kills it outright. Push that threshold high enough and white and magic monsters reach a 100% cull chance, at which point clearing a map stops being a damage problem and becomes a coverage problem. Witchhunter gets Culling Strike baseline, which is what makes this the natural home for the archetype.

The other half of the design is Weapon Master, which converts the passive tree into weapon-set passives and effectively lets you run two builds on one character. Weapon set one is pure culling — attack speed, mobility and extra culling threshold — while weapon set two is a dedicated single-target tree built around projectile damage, two-handed damage and critical hit chance, feeding an Oil Barrage setup. Rare monsters, which cannot be culled, are handled by a Detonate Living technique layered on top.

Defence comes from Sorcery Ward, which the creator rates as one of the best defensive mechanics in the game when properly stacked. Because most Culling Strike items sit on evasion bases, the ward and the gear pull in the same direction. The showcased hardcore character is farming 200% Delirium and pinnacle bosses on a deliberately un-minmaxed setup with no premium lineage gems.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Full-screen clear through culling — with 100% cull chance on white and magic monsters, a single Killing Palm can wipe a dense pack
  • Weapon Master lets one character carry a separate clear tree and a separate boss tree
  • Sorcery Ward plus evasion is exceptionally tanky; the Hisvile Intrusion staff variant adds around 46% block on top of roughly 7,000 ward
  • Single target is genuinely modular — Oil Barrage, Supercharged Slam, Fragmentation Rounds, Plasma Blast and Flicker Strike have all been used
  • Proven in both softcore and hardcore at 200% Delirium and all pinnacle bosses on a budget setup

Cons

  • Culling Strike is not available for the entire campaign — it does not come online until you get Myus Oxort or Horror’s Flight
  • The leveling path requires two or three playstyle swaps (crossbow to level 31, then Rend or Dragon, then a full armour-to-evasion gear swap around maps)
  • Killing Palm’s constant screen-warping is visually punishing over long sessions; Hisvile Intrusion is the calmer alternative
  • Oil Barrage does not function reliably on bosses until Lingering Illusion supplies power charges

Key Skills

  • Culling Strike — the clear mechanic; baseline on Witchhunter
  • Killing Palm — chains to every cullable enemy nearby, teleporting you as it goes
  • Hisvile Intrusion — the slower, more controlled culling alternative with better defensive stats
  • Oil Barrage — the primary single-target skill on weapon set two
  • Lingering Illusion — the spirit gem that makes power charges reliable in boss fights

Gear & Anointments

The build is gated on one of two uniques — Myus Oxort or Horror’s Flight — which is what turns Culling Strike from a passive bonus into the main clear. Before that, level with crossbows to around level 31, then optionally swap to Rend. The gear plan changes shape at maps: you start on armour, which carries more raw damage through talisman and attack nodes on that side of the tree, and migrate to evasion once good pieces are available, because evasion nodes grant both raw evasion and large amounts of deflection rating and feed Sorcery Ward directly. The creator recommends starting to collect evasion pieces during Interlude Acts. A Hisvile Intrusion staff can roll spirit and block chance, making it the tankier of the two culling setups. Specific rare-item stat priorities are best confirmed against the linked build guide.

Endgame Notes

The showcased hardcore character farms 200% Delirium and fully juiced Abyss tablets with no premium lineage gems — only Dominus’ Grasp — which the creator uses as evidence the archetype does not need heavy investment to reach pinnacle content. Legacy of Death Blow opens the door to running Culling Strike on other ascendancies, including a Gemling variant, but the creator expects to stay on Witchhunter for the Weapon Master and Sorcery Ward synergy.
