Overview
The Despair Sorceress is a trigger-driven elemental caster that leans on Cast on Critical to convert crit strikes into a continuous stream of Fireballs. Rather than hard-casting one heavy fire spell and waiting for the damage to land, the build turns the character into a self-sustaining fire engine: crits fire the trigger, the trigger throws Fireballs, and Arc, Frost Wall and Frost Bomb fill in whatever the fire damage does not already cover.
Fire is the theme, but the package is genuinely tri-elemental. Arc supplies lightning chaining and screen coverage, Frost Wall provides body-blocking and control, and Frost Bomb applies exposure for the fights that need it. Elemental Weakness handles curse pressure on tanky targets and Sigil of Power creates a defined burst window, which is what lets a single skill layout serve both mapping and single-target work without a full respec between the two.
The trade-off is that everything hinges on crit consistency. If the passive tree and gear do not deliver enough critical chance, the trigger stutters and the Fireballs stop feeling automatic. That makes crit scaling, cast speed and energy shield the three axes the build wants investment in before anything else.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Cast on Critical automates the main damage, so the moment-to-moment play is movement and positioning rather than spell rotation
- One skill layout covers both mapping and bosses; weapon-set points handle the split instead of a swap
- Arc plus Snake Pit projectile behaviour gives wide screen coverage on top of the Fireball burst
- Sigil of Power and Elemental Weakness give a real, repeatable boss damage window
- Life Remnants and Siphon Elements keep recovery flowing while the triggers run constantly
Cons
- Heavily unique-dependent — The Vertex, The Covenant, Snake Pit and a Voltaic Staff all carry the setup
- Falls apart below a crit threshold; early gear makes the trigger feel inconsistent
- Multiple sapphire jewels and rare jewels make the full build expensive to assemble
- Constant screen-wide fire and lightning effects can make dangerous ground telegraphs hard to read
Key Skills
- Cast on Critical — the engine; converts critical hits into automatic Fireball casts
- Fireball — main damage payload, supported by propulsion, tempered and imbued style supports plus Life Tap
- Arc — lightning chaining for spread packs and extra clear coverage
- Frost Wall — control and body-blocking, run with Spell Cascade for coverage
- Frost Bomb / Elemental Weakness — exposure and curse pressure reserved for tanky enemies and bosses
- Sigil of Power — the burst window; stand in or near it during single-target fights
Gear & Anointments
The weapon base is a Voltaic Staff, with a Sacred Focus in the second weapon slot to support the caster tooling. Uniques carry most of the build’s identity: The Vertex for the helmet, The Covenant for body armour (it pairs with the Life Tap links), Snake Pit as a ring for its projectile behaviour and clear speed, plus a second breach ring. The remaining rare slots — gloves, boots, amulet and belt — cover attributes, resistances and energy shield.
Jewel sockets matter as much as the gear. The build wants several sapphire jewels alongside diamond and rare jewels, scaling critical values, energy shield, spell damage and recovery. Specific anointments are not called out in the source, so treat anoint choices as to be confirmed against the source video.
Endgame Notes
Ascendancy order is Disciple of Varashta, taking the teaching node first for early identity, then the ritual sustain node, then the instruments node once the Voltaic Staff and Sacred Focus are online, with the barrier node last. Weapon set one is tuned for core damage and the trigger, set two for utility and boss tools — Sigil of Power, Frost Bomb and Elemental Weakness matter far more in a boss window than in a map. As crit, cast speed, elemental damage and jewel quality improve, the trigger rate climbs and the build scales smoothly into deep endgame content.
