Overview
This is the second progress update on a Grenades Gemling that was picked as a league starter for Forbidden Rites (0.5.5) and then simply never got replaced. The core loop is unchanged from day one — cycle several different grenade types off a crossbow, let Demolitionist convert that variety into stacking extra fire damage, and clear the screen before anything reaches you — but four days of upgrades have pushed it from “good enough for maps” to comfortably running juiced Expedition and Abyss with Delirium.
What makes the build stand out is how little it costs to reach a functional state. The whole thing is carried by two cheap uniques: a Redemption crossbow that stays serviceable well past T15 maps, and Constricting Command, which unlocks the surrounded-condition wheels on the tree and enables Defy II. Everything after that is incremental — a rare Siege Crossbow, a Headhunter, a better amulet — rather than a gating requirement.
Defensively it is a pure life-and-armour character with no clever tricks. Maximum life on every slot, armour bases everywhere, Iron Reflexes converting stray evasion into armour, and “armour applies to elemental damage” repeated across the gear. Combined with the Gemling’s rune-mode scaling, the result is roughly 3,300 life, 16,000 unbuffed armour and capped resistances including chaos.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- League-start viable on a handful of chaos — Redemption plus Constricting Command carries the character to T15 maps
- Genuinely fast: 55% base movement speed, Onslaught from the crossbow, Rite of Passage, and Headhunter on top
- Scales cleanly into juiced content — Expedition, Abyss and Delirium all handled without a rework
- Dedicated armour-break opener means bosses die to the same skill setup that clears maps
- Time of Need strips every curse and ailment on a four-second cycle, which covers most of the build’s blind spots
Cons
- Gemling gem-socket management is fiddly — you are counting red/green/blue support gems to keep Gem Started balanced
- Requires the Onset-ring trick to socket extra strength-requirement skills purely for Virtuous Barrier runes
- Armour break on bosses depends on a separate Flash Grenade setup; the mapping armour-break source (Rite of Passage) does not apply
- Mana runs dry without Defy II active, so a small mana leech roll is effectively mandatory
Key Skills
- Explosive Grenade — primary clear; Multishot, Deliberation, Elemental Armament, Defy II, Short Fuse to keep loot close
- Cluster Grenade — main damage payload; Vorana’s Siege adds 20% more damage against isolated targets, making it the boss skill too
- Flash Grenade — physical-scaled armour-break opener with Armour Break III and Armour Demolisher
- Oil Grenade / Gas Grenade — exposure and ground effects, but mainly there to feed Demolitionist’s per-grenade-type fire damage bonus
- Mirage Archer — fires Cluster Grenades on dodge roll; a large share of both clear and damage
Gear & Anointments
A Siege Crossbow base is the target — it grants an additional grenade projectile — rolled for high flat physical, hybrid physical, attack skill levels, and ideally Onslaught for the movement and skill speed. Constricting Command is the build-defining unique and stays in the setup permanently; Redemption is the cheap stand-in until a rare crossbow appears. Gloves are Leatherbound Gauntlets, chosen so their armour rating feeds evasion that Iron Reflexes converts straight back into armour.
- Amulet anoint: Paragon — +5 quality of skills, which is the single best line available to a Gemling
- Charm: Rite of Passage golden charm with Wolf — skill speed, movement speed, and armour break on hit while the effect is up
- Jewel: Emerald with critical chance, projectile damage, crossbow damage and movement speed
- Cap chaos resistance with Void Flux from Expedition, which rewrites an existing resistance on any piece rather than costing you a gear slot
Endgame Notes
Expedition is called out as the strongest farming mechanic for this build in the current patch, and Headhunter makes it substantially better. Juiced Abyss with Delirium is also cleared without changes. For bosses the sequence is Oil Grenade, Gas Grenade, two Flash Grenades to strip armour, then Cluster and Explosive Grenade for the kill.
