Overview
Flicker Strike has always been a high-ceiling Monk archetype, and in 0.5 the pieces finally line up. This build turns the Monk into a power-charge engine: Whirling Assault spins through packs, Cast on Critical fires a low-level Profane Ritual that eats corpses into charges, and those charges are dumped into Flicker Strike or Falling Thunder. The result is a melee build that moves at teleport speed and deletes screens before the pack finishes its spawn animation.
Two 0.5 changes carry the build. Nova projectiles now take a smaller damage penalty, so Falling Thunder can clear a full 360-degree ring without giving up damage, and Soul Spring’s Eternal grants meta skills increased spirit reservation efficiency, which makes the Cast on Critical package affordable alongside the herald stack. Charged Staff layers lightning onto every hit and keeps Herald of Thunder proccing, so clear and single-target share the same scaling.
Defensively this is a Chaos Inoculation setup built on energy shield, evasion and deflection. The endgame target is roughly 6,500 energy shield, 75% evasion and 70% deflection, with Ghost Dance recovering around 1,000 energy shield on hit. It is not a cheap build, but once the charge loop and the crit floor are in place it maps as fast as anything in the patch and still has the burst to one-shot bosses.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Extremely fast clear — Flicker Strike chains in open layouts, Falling Thunder covers a full circle in tight ones
- Genuine single-target burst through the Mantra of Destruction to Ali’ege Chimes charge conversion
- Chaos Inoculation removes the usual energy-shield weakness and frees gear affixes for rarity and damage
- Herald of Thunder and Herald of Ice explosions add a second clear layer that scales off the same crit investment
- Two viable spenders means you can play whichever feels better without rebuilding
Cons
- High investment — the creator is explicit that this is not a budget build
- Needs roughly 60% crit chance on Whirling Assault before Cast on Critical feels reliable; below that the charge loop stalls
- Chaos Inoculation only comes online around 4,000 energy shield, so the transition window is awkward
- Busy rotation: charge generation, Charged Staff uptime, combo building and mark application all have to be managed
Key Skills
- Whirling Assault — main mapping skill and the start of the whole chain; crits into Cast on Critical to generate charges
- Flicker Strike — charge spender for open maps and bossing; Perpetual Charge extends chains without consuming charges
- Falling Thunder — the other spender; with No Projectiles and Nova Projectiles it clears a full circle around you
- Charged Staff — the main damage buff, adds lightning to attacks and applies blind for the tree’s blind synergy
- Cast on Critical + Profane Ritual — level 5 Profane Ritual consumes corpses into power charges while mapping
- Mantra of Destruction + Ali’ege Chimes — the boss-fight charge source; keep Mantra at zero quality so 20 combo converts into five power charges
Gear & Anointments
The quarterstaff is the single most important piece. Avoid the Dreaming Quarterstaff — 0% critical hit chance guts the whole Cast on Critical loop. Target a high cold DPS staff with attack or melee skill levels, critical strike chance, elemental damage with attacks, critical damage bonus and attack speed, socketed with a Feral’s Rune of the Hunt and a Venomous Rune of the Agony for the chaos armour-break herald tech.
- Body armour — evasion/energy shield hybrid base; more ES and evasion means more spirit from Lead Me Through Grace, and deflection rating if you can get it
- Helmet — high energy shield (350-450+) to feed Subterfuge Mask, which converts helmet ES into evasion, plus crit chance and resistances
- Gloves — flat damage, +2 melee skills, attack speed, and physical damage leeched as mana for the Oasis support
- Boots — movement speed, deflection, evasion, energy shield, rarity
- Belt — Chevron Satchel, so an instant-recovery life flask heals energy shield on demand
- Amulet — anointed with Tribal Fury; look for evasion, maximum energy shield, melee skill levels and crit chance
Ascendancy is Martial Artist, taken in order: Way of the Stone Fist, Marshall Adept, Marshall Master, then Hollow Focus Technique.
Endgame Notes
The passive tree is built around maximum power charges (Overflowing Power, Power Within), crit chance (Moment of Truth, Careful Assassination, Heart Stopping, Heartbreaking), and the evasion/ES/deflection cluster (Subterfuge Mask, Enhanced Reflexes, High Alert, Spectral Ward, Patient Barrier). Blind is a real damage layer here — Charged Staff applies it, and Blinding Strike, Distracted Target, Dizzying Hits and Stupefy all convert that blind into extra damage and crit. High Alert is free value once Chaos Inoculation keeps you permanently at full life. Elemental Confusion is a large damage boost once spirit allows it.
