Overview
This is Phalanx’s refreshed Whirling Assault Titan league-starter for Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5, rebuilt around the recent skill changes. Whirling Assault now applies splash damage only once per damaging area and its quality bonus was retuned to 20% increased attack speed, but the playstyle survives the nerfs almost intact. Phalanx demonstrates a tier 1 to tier 15 map clear inside roughly an hour using only an Act 4 weapon, zero quality Whirling Assault, and no Tribal Fury passive — proof the build is still a strong, low-investment league starter.
The early game leans on classic Warrior staples: Rolling Slam paired with Bone Shatter for clear, and basic attack or Perfect Strike for single targets. After level 22 the build switches to Shield Wall as the primary leveling skill, supported by Warbringer ascendancy choices for sustained Warcry uptime. Whirling Assault takes over at maps, with a Mantra of Destruction plus Bell setup for boss melt and a smooth pivot into the Titan ascendancy once you reach the Cruel difficulty respec window.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- True one-button mapper: Whirling Assault carves screen-wide AoE with minimal setup.
- League-start friendly — clears tier 15 maps on an Act 4 weapon with no quality and no Tribal Fury.
- Strong boss rotation using Mantra of Destruction, Bell, and Infernal Cry that melts pinnacle targets.
- Cheap defensive core built around Brass Dome body armour for massive armour stacking.
- Smooth leveling path that reuses staple Warrior skills (Rolling Slam, Bone Shatter, Shield Wall).
Cons
- Patch 0.5 nerfed Whirling Assault splash and Shield Wall, so peak damage is lower than 0.4.
- Resistance and life pool stay rough through the campaign; expect squishy moments in early maps.
- Crit endgame scaling requires a real-time gear pivot later — not laid out in this video.
- Two-handed mace dependency means weapon upgrades drive most of your damage spikes.
Key Skills
- Whirling Assault — Primary map clearing and combo builder for the boss rotation.
- Rolling Slam + Bone Shatter — Campaign workhorse for Acts 1 through 3.
- Shield Wall — Leveling backbone from level 22 onward, used in a Warcry shotgun loop.
- Mantra of Destruction + Bell — Boss-melt combo cast after stacking combo with Whirling Assault.
- Perfect Strike or Basic Attack — Single-target campaign filler; basic attack remains viable if Perfect Strike timing is tricky.
Gear & Anointments
The build is weapon-driven. Phalanx recommends transitioning to a two-handed mace in the early acts since Rolling Slam was nerfed and the extra base damage compensates. By Act 4 the target weapon is a level 45 or 49 quarterstaff base with at least a T7 increased physical damage modifier, crafted using Essence of Operation — a cheap trade on league launch. The next upgrade is a level 75+ base with a minimum T4 increased physical mod, ideally pushing into early endgame.
- Two-handed mace through the early acts; Quarterstaff once Act 4 is reached.
- Brass Dome chest for raw armour on a tight budget.
- Talisman on the swap weapon set to socket Ferocious Roar for instant Rage and armour break.
- Warbringer ascendancy nodes for infinite Warcry uptime; Titan ascendancy once Whirling Assault comes online.
- Mid-game pivot toward Constricting Command with The Surrender shield; specific uniques to be confirmed against the source video.
Endgame Notes
For RoTA and tier 15 mapping the recommended chest is Brass Dome for its outsized armour pool, paired with continued weapon upgrades on quarterstaff bases. The boss rotation stays simple: build combo with Whirling Assault, then chain Bell into Mantra of Destruction into Infernal Cry to detonate pinnacle targets. Mid-game upgrades target Constricting Command plus The Surrender, and the long-term endgame plan is a crit-based scaling pivot that Phalanx will document live as the league progresses.
