Strategy
This is a complete walkthrough of the Abyss mechanic in 0.5 — why you farm it, how to clear its quest line, and how to build the atlas tree for profit. The core draw is abyssal bones for desecrating weapons (adding or rerolling modifiers from unique augment pools), plus the chance for Rogue Exiles to be absorbed into Abyss guys and drop Heart of the Well diamonds. The desecration currency ranges from common (still sells for a stack of exalts) to rare drops worth multiple divine orbs, which is what makes Abyss a steady earner. Unlike Ritual or Breach, Abyss does not demand a powerful character to start — most branches only ask for tier 6 waystones, with the final branch at tier 11.
Atlas Tree & Setup
Abyss spits open with several fishers per map; clear the surrounding monsters to close each one, then deal with the rare monsters that pour out (they hit hard with chaos, so bring chaos resistance). Some pits open into Abyssal Depths — special +1 monster-level areas that drop higher item-level bases and Abyssal Echoes for rerolling desecrated mods. On the atlas tree, prioritise the right branch (more chances at Abyssal Depths, extra pits, and the overrun node that floods the next map with Abyss). The center node lets you pick a faction: Ulaman for currency chests (the easy starter), Amanamu for stronger monsters and better/more omens. Check the market before chasing Abyssal Eyes — Ulaman Gaze can sit at ~16 divines while Amanamu Gaze is ~1.5.
Investment & Returns
- Investment: low — playable on modest gear and low-tier waystones
- Returns: mid — steady desecration currency, omens and the occasional Heart of the Well; spikes when you hit rare abyssal currency
- Scales hard with the overrun atlas node once your character can handle the density
Step-by-step
- Complete the Abyss quest line from Ziggurat Refuge to bank the bulk of the atlas points in one go.
- In each map, close every fisher’s three fishes and clear the rares; dive any Abyssal Depths for level-80+ bases.
- Defeat the depth boss for a Kulemak invitation; use it to reach the Grip of Kulemak.
- Apply three faction modifiers (Ulaman/Korgal/Amanamu) to the creature, then return the finger to fight the real pinnacle for unique belt/ring rewards.
- Tune the atlas faction node to whatever currency you are hunting.
Risks
- Rare monsters from closed pits deal heavy chaos damage — cap chaos resistance
- The overrun + effectiveness nodes can make maps unkillable if you are under-geared; you cannot currently respec atlas nodes
- Abyssal Eyes are very rare even with increased-find nodes — do not over-invest expecting them
