Strategy
This is a fast crash-course on running Expedition profitably in patch 0.5.3. Expedition’s value comes from two compounding systems: the runes that carry over between remnant detonations, and the crafting recipes you unlock that gate the best remnant rewards. Get both rolling and a single well-staggered detonation chain can drop currency, exceptional bases, and full screens of loot.
It works because the mechanic rewards setup over raw investment — you don’t need expensive items to start, you need your Atlas tree finished, the King’s March quest line done, and your runic teachings collected. For players who feel Expedition is “not dropping anything good,” the answer is almost always missing recipes rather than bad luck.
Atlas Tree & Setup
Fully complete your Atlas skill tree first, then finish the Ruins of King’s March quest line (talk to every NPC, complete their logbooks). The early grind is about unlocking recipes: blow up and explore the cave entrances on each Expedition map — they have a chance to drop Runic Teachings, which grant the undiscovered recipes (check your recipe list with the B keybind).
For Grand Expeditions, use Jaydo as Atlas Master (Veridian remnants have a 10% chance to roll an additional time, extra tablet effect, and corrupted keystones gain an additional modifier — always corrupt keystones up to T15). Run irradiated tablets prioritizing increased rarity, increased effectiveness, and map modifiers; the flex slot can be summoning circles, experience, or increased exceptional items. For travel maps, use Doriani with increased effectiveness and irradiated modifier effect.
Investment & Returns
- Investment: low to start — the gating cost is time spent unlocking recipes, not currency. Tablets are cheap.
- Returns: mid and scalable — currency chests (minimum ~4 currency types, exalt up to divine), golden armament chests (near-guaranteed exceptional items), map chests (T15 maps), and big remnant explosions once purple runes stack. Elder Sagas sell for ~23 divine.
Step-by-step
- Finish the Atlas tree and the King’s March quest line; collect Runic Teachings from cave entrances until your recipes are complete.
- On each map, prioritize remnants carrying the gold/purple rune — purple runes carry over and stagger them in a line so the final remnant inherits a stacked rune pool.
- Always loot the golden currency chests, question-mark chests, map chests, and golden armament chests.
- Use island rumors to hunt the best Grand Expeditions and bosses; do the minimum travel maps to reach them.
- Run ocean-map Expeditions (aim for double-tall flagpoles → Expedition rares) to sustain logbooks. Use Sagas to guarantee specific boss encounters.
Risks
- Do NOT run Elder Sagas before you have all recipes — the top-end rewards are hidden behind recipes, and it’s expensive RNG (the creator lost money on an early one).
- Don’t corrupt keystones into modifiers your build can’t run.
- Without purple-rune staggering, detonations feel bad and drop little.
