Strategy
Abyss is one of the few mechanics that pays primarily in crafting currency rather than raw orbs. The cracks that open in maps spill Abyssal monsters, and clearing them seals the crack — often converting it into a chest that drops the crafting materials used for Abyss-modifier items. On top of that sit the omens, which is where the real money is: Omen of Light was trading around six divine at the time of recording, and several others sit between a few exalted and a few divine each.
The mechanic is available from Act 2 onward, which makes it unusually accessible, and it scales all the way into maps where an Abyss atlas tree stacks on top of the regular atlas tree. The deeper layer — Abyssal Depths — always generates one tier above your current map, so a tier 15 map opens a tier 16 instance, which is where the better item bases come from.
This suits players who want a mechanic that funds crafting and sells omens, rather than one that maximises raw divine per hour.
Atlas Tree & Setup
Abyss first appears in Act 2 in the Mastodon Badlands: head through the Lightless Passage cave and continue to the Well of Souls, where an NPC lets you unveil Abyss options using Abyss crafting materials.
In the endgame, the creator’s strong recommendation is to complete the Fortress questline and the Arbiter of Divinity first, then move to the Abyss questline — found to the right and slightly down on the atlas, in the area shaped like a crater. Walking to the centre of that zone unlocks a second Well of Souls, distinct from the Act 2 one, which can interact with items the earlier one cannot.
From there the questline asks you to seal cracks across several maps. Completing a map means killing its boss. Nodes marked with the Abyss symbol award extra points toward the Abyss atlas tree, so route through those deliberately. After roughly three rounds of crack-sealing you receive a Kulemak Invitation.
Investment & Returns
- Investment: low — the mechanic is free to engage with and needs no sustain items to start
- Returns: mid — steady crafting materials and omens, with occasional large hits from invitations and unique drops
- Scaling: the Abyss atlas tree plus Abyssal Depths access is what lifts it. Subsequent Kulemak Invitations are tradeable and were selling around six divine, and the boss reward item the creator ended with was worth roughly seven divine against a cheaper entry cost
Step-by-step
- From Act 2, clear Abyss cracks whenever they appear — green dotted lines on the minimap — to accumulate crafting materials.
- After the campaign, finish the Fortress questline and Arbiter of Divinity before starting the Abyss chain.
- Walk to the centre of the crater area on the atlas to unlock the endgame Well of Souls, then speak to the NPC there.
- Seal cracks across maps, prioritising nodes bearing the Abyss symbol for extra atlas points.
- Enter Abyssal Depths whenever a crack opens one — it generates one tier above your map and is the best source of high-level bases and omens.
- Hunt the large coiling humanoid serpent enemies specifically; they drop the expensive omens.
- After about three rounds of crack-sealing you receive a Kulemak Invitation. Use it at the Well of Souls to fight the boss.
- At the boss, repeatedly choose to empower rather than take the finger, until only return the finger remains — this upgrades the item you receive at the end.
Risks
- The serpent enemies release a static black cloud if not killed quickly; without strong damage you must kite them out of it before killing them, or lose the omen
- Omen prices swing hard by league, so the divine values quoted here should be re-checked before committing
- The first Kulemak Invitation is story-mode and cannot be traded — only later ones are sellable
- Progress requires completing maps by killing bosses, so the mechanic is gated behind general map clear speed
