Strategy
The Atlas Passive Skill Tree in Path of Exile 2 is the backbone of all endgame power. Every node you unlock multiplies the loot and progression speed of your maps, so your first objective after finishing the campaign should be to unlock all 311 atlas points before committing to any serious farming. Playing without a completed atlas tree means leaving enormous amounts of power—and drop quantity—on the table.
There are three distinct methods to complete the atlas: the slow manual approach, the efficient beam-clearing method, and the buy-your-way-in fast lane. This guide walks through all three and tells you which to prioritize.
Atlas Tree & Setup
When you finish the campaign, speak to the Hooded One, then collect the starting map from Dojani and load it into your Map Device—this kicks off the endgame. Your first target is the tower near your starting position on the atlas. Completing it opens the path toward the Great Citadel and the early main quest chain.
As you progress you will encounter the Burning Monolith, which requires three fragments: one you already have from Dojani, and two more from the bosses guarding the left and right gates. Defeat those bosses, combine your fragments, and you can attempt the first Pinnacle Boss (the Arbiter of Ash). This boss has randomized phases—sometimes an awkward double-mechanic phase appears early, so do not be discouraged if it takes multiple attempts. At 30–40 maps completed at this stage, that is completely normal.
After the Arbiter, the second major tower requires fragments from the Matriarch Hall and the Patriarch Hall. Descend into the tower basement to combine the two pieces into an Origin Core orb, then carry it upstairs to summon and defeat a second Arbiter. Killing this boss unlocks an entire region of atlas points in one go—up to 40 points at once instead of clearing every node individually.
Tower tip: Always complete the outer towers in each region manually. They grant 3 atlas points each, and critically they lift the fog of war around them so you can see the orange beam encounters on the map. Without the tower vision you are navigating blind.
Early atlas tree priority: Immediately after your first boss kill, path toward the Tablet nodes. Tablets slot into your Map Device and raise the monster level of any map by +1, effectively letting a lower-tier waystone generate higher-tier drops. A Rare-quality map unlocks two tablet slots; investing atlas nodes can push that up to three or four affixes on tablets, netting bonuses like +30% Gold and +33% more Waystones. That accelerator compounds throughout the atlas completion run.
Investment & Returns
The core route costs nothing beyond the time to play through the questline. If you want to accelerate, the two Origin fragments (Origin Cradle and Origin Spark) that combine into the Origin Core can be purchased from other players. At the time of this guide they traded around 290–300 Exalted Orbs each; prices fluctuate with the league economy. Buying these fragments lets you skip the orange-beam farming step entirely and unlock a full region in minutes instead of hours.
Beyond fragment costs, you may need to top up on Maps from Dojani if your waystone pool runs thin—Dojani always sells maps one tier below your current running tier, which is a safe fallback.
Step-by-step
- Complete the campaign, speak to the Hooded One, receive the starting map from Dojani.
- Open the first tower to trigger the Great Citadel quest chain.
- Clear the left and right gates to collect two boss fragments. Combined with Dojani’s fragment, enter the Burning Monolith and defeat the Arbiter of Ash (retry freely—no run cost).
- Advance into the next region. Collect fragments from the Matriarch Hall and Patriarch Hall. Merge them in the tower basement into an Origin Core, go upstairs, summon and defeat the second Arbiter.
- Each Arbiter kill unlocks an entire region’s worth of atlas points (~40 at once).
- After the quest introduction, you need to repeat the fragment-gathering cycle four more times across the remaining regions to unlock all central atlas points (311 total).
- Method A (Slow): Run every map node individually for a single point each.
- Method B (Efficient): After clearing each region’s tower, hunt the orange beam encounters visible through tower sight lines. Each beam leads to a fragment boss. Two beams per region = two fragments = one Origin Core = one region unlocked at once.
- Method C (Fast): Buy Origin Cradle + Origin Spark directly from the trade market, combine them, and skip straight to the boss encounter.
- While running the beams, slot Breach or Abyss tablets (fast, low-detour mechanics) to stack extra loot on every map without slowing your atlas progress.
Risks
- Rushing the grind before completing the atlas: The tree gates so much loot and map-drop rate that farming seriously before finishing all 311 points is inefficient. Avoid getting attached to farming a single mechanic until the full tree is unlocked.
- Skipping towers: Without tower vision you cannot see where the orange beams spawn, making Method B nearly impossible. Always complete outer towers manually first.
- Fragment price volatility: The cost to buy-in via traded fragments changes drastically with league economy shifts. Check current prices before committing.
- Underprepared boss attempts: Both Arbiters can punish unprepared builds, especially with early double-mechanic phases. Confirm your flasks, resistances, and damage are in order before each attempt. The pre-bosses in each region are a reliable benchmark—if you comfortably cleared them, you are ready for the Arbiter.
- Hardcore mode: Arbiter deaths are permanent in HC. In softcore you can retry infinitely.
