Overview
This Infernalist turns Spark into a boss-melting engine by letting Spell Totems do all of the casting. Ancestral Bond lets Spell Totems be summoned by reserving Spirit instead of using charges, so a high-Spirit sceptre comfortably supports four totems. Six is possible, but the build pays for each totem out of its mana pool and the extra investment rarely feels worth it.
The damage core is mana stacking. Eldritch Battery converts energy shield into mana, Archmage turns a pool of around 7,000 mana into a huge “gain as extra lightning” bonus, and because the totems cast the spell, the character barely feels Archmage’s mana cost. Life is reserved down to low life so the build can use low-life tech such as Pain Attunement, low-life cast speed nodes and the Execute support. Grinning Immolation from the ascendancy adds a large chunk of crit damage, and its self-ignite drawback never triggers because the player never crits personally.
Defence comes from the same mana pool: with high “damage taken from mana before life” and roughly 1,400–1,700 mana regeneration per second (more under Arcane Surge), the character shrugs off most sustained damage and only fears one-shots. The source shows roughly 160–220k DPS per totem in a boss setup, with four totems stacking on top of each other.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Very high single-target damage once four totems are down and Mana Tempest is popped
- Large mana pool plus fast regeneration gives solid sustain against everything except one-shots
- High movement speed from low-life boot runes and soul cores
- Two passive tree versions: a high-investment crit tree and a cheaper non-crit tree
- Budget options exist (Cloak of Defiance covers most of the mana-before-life requirement)
Cons
- Totem placement speed behaves oddly; the creator found that only jewel-based placement speed made a real difference
- Balancing Spirit, energy shield and mana-before-life across gear takes planning
- Mana Tempest is risky on maps because it drains the pool that also acts as your health
- No weapon swap, because swapping despawns the totems
- The top crit version relies on a very expensive support gem
Key Skills
- Spark (on Spell Totem) — main damage, with Pierce for map coverage (the non-crit tree uses chain instead)
- Spell Totem — the four Spirit-reserved totems that do all the casting
- Frost Bomb — applies Exposure; keep its level high so it works on high-level monsters
- Elemental Weakness — curse for bosses and tough rares, can carry Arcane Surge
- Mana Tempest — burst window for boss fights only
- Archmage / Discipline — mana-to-damage engine and flat mana
Gear & Anointments
The wand wants +levels to lightning or spell skills, crit chance, crafted cast speed, high maximum mana and spell, lightning or elemental damage. Avoid “gain as extra damage” prefixes, because Archmage already gives a large gain bucket. The sceptre should have about 170+ Spirit and a high-level Discipline. Chest, belt and helmet share the job of providing Spirit and damage taken from mana before life. Mnemonic-style rings with high mana and mana regeneration are a big upgrade. Lavianga’s Spirits keeps a flask effect up for the belt’s flask-conditional mods. Recommended anoints include a mana/life/movement notable or Mental Perseverance for extra regeneration. For totem speed, use three jewels with totem placement speed (around 55–70% combined) rather than the support gem or tree nodes.
Endgame Notes
For bosses, place the curse and Frost Bomb, drop the totems, then use Mana Tempest as the boss spawns. On maps, skip Mana Tempest or avoid spending mana heavily right after it.
