Overview

Twister on a Gemling Legionnaire looks like a simple spear build and is not one. The damage comes from a charge-and-release loop: Whirling Slash builds Salvo charges, and Twister spends them — but only a full six-charge release puts a meaningful number of twisters on screen. Players who spam Twister at one charge get a build that feels clunky and weak, which is the single most common mistake with the archetype.

Defensively it is an evasion build carried by deflection rating rather than by raw evasion. The target is roughly 50–60% evasion with deflection pushed as high as gear allows, using a T1 deflection suffix on every armour piece plus the “damage prevented by deflection” nodes on the tree. That combination is what makes the build feel tanky in juiced maps despite a thin life pool.

The Gemling ascendancy adds a layer of its own: keeping every socketed support’s attribute requirement equal unlocks the gem-studded bonus — reduced crit damage taken, 30% cheaper skills, and movement speed while casting. That constraint shapes the entire gem setup.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Extremely fast movement once Whirling Slash attack time is pushed near 0.12s
  • Very high deflection ceiling makes it comfortable in heavily juiced content
  • Screen-wide clear when the full charge combo is executed properly
  • Trinity double-element scaling roughly doubles damage without exotic gear
  • Two unset rings plus augmented flesh grant extra skill slots for free defensive motes

Cons

  • Combo execution is unforgiving — playing it wrong makes the build feel bad
  • Gem-studded balancing forces careful, non-obvious support gem choices
  • The Taming ring is effectively mandatory for the real damage jump
  • Weapon investment is steep; a fast attack-speed spear is a large purchase
  • Energy shield buffer helps against boss one-shots but does not recover while mapping

Key Skills

  • Twister — the damage payload; only release at full Salvo charges
  • Whirling Slash — charge generator and movement skill; attack speed is the whole build’s tempo
  • Salvo / Barrage — charge accumulation and repeat, both must be up before releasing
  • Ice-Tipped Arrows — converts the spear’s physical portion to cold, enabling Trinity
  • Wind Dancer / Combat Frenzy — the defensive block, kept on both weapon sets

Gear & Anointments

Every armour piece wants a T1 deflection suffix — helmet, gloves, boots and body armour alike. The more evasion rating the piece already carries, the less deflection it needs, but in practice all four slots need it. Body armour can take an evasion/energy shield hybrid for a small buffer against boss hits.

Guiding Palm of the Mind supplies 25% of damage as extra lightning, which is the cheap route into Trinity. Yoke of Suffering is the damage multiplier of the setup — enemies take increased damage per element on them, and this build applies ignite, chill and shock routinely; keep reduced element duration modest so uptime holds. The Taming is the first major upgrade, since triple ground infusion on Whirling Slash more than doubles damage and frees the Beast slot for Trinity.

Rings and gloves are flat added damage on prefixes with resistances and deflection on suffixes. For charms, a thawing charm is the priority — freeze is the worst failure mode — followed by a stun charm.

Endgame Notes

Weapon set one carries Whirling Slash and the general kit; set two carries Twister, Trinity, War Banner and Ice-Tipped Arrows. Trinity requires roughly even damage across two elements, so check the calcs page after any weapon swap — fire is usually too low to reach the triple buff, and double Trinity is already a large gain. Four extra dexterity spear skills held on the bar generate additional motes, which convert directly into evasion and deflection.
