Overview

This is the quintessential Archmage build: mana is simultaneously the damage stat and the health bar. Archmage adds extra lightning damage per point of maximum mana, and the setup then bends the whole character sheet toward mana — Eldritch Battery converts energy shield into mana, and enough damage is shifted to be taken from mana that Chaos Inoculation becomes viable and life stats can be ignored entirely.

Spark is the delivery mechanism. It needs projectile speed, skill duration and pierce to be worth anything, and once those are in place a single Spark can re-hit the same target roughly every two thirds of a second. Cold infusion from Frost Bomb makes the projectiles faster and harder-hitting, while Spellslinger on a dueling wand triggers Ark and Flame Wall in the background.

Odealo is blunt about the trade-off: clear speed is incredible, but this is an expensive character. It needs above-baseline spellcaster rares in nearly every slot, and boss damage is directly tied to how much you spent.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Outstanding clear speed once Spark projectile stats are online
  • Mana doubles as a defensive pool — with enough damage shifted, you are extremely hard to kill
  • Triggered Ark and Flame Wall via Spellslinger add damage with no extra button presses
  • Very high ceiling; scales with gem levels, crit, penetration and every point of maximum mana

Cons

  • Expensive. The creator says so directly — this is not a budget or league-start build
  • Almost no useful uniques to fall back on; you need rares with mana, ES and resistances together
  • Boss damage is budget-gated rather than mechanically guaranteed
  • Little mobility while casting, and a lot of interlocking keystones to get right
  • Requires over 200 spirit, which competes with everything else on your gear

Key Skills

  • Spark — main damage, linked with Zenith, Efficiency, Pinpoint Critical, Pierce and Projectile Acceleration
  • Frost Bomb — generates cold infusion for Spark and applies exposure
  • Spellslinger (dueling wand) — triggers Ark and Flame Wall off your normal casts
  • Mana Tempest — large lightning damage boost that also splits empowered projectiles
  • Archmage — the core buff, 100 spirit, converting maximum mana into lightning damage
  • Mana Remnants / Siphon Elements — sustain engine that lets mana overflow

Gear & Anointments

Eldritch Battery is the only mandatory keystone; Chaos Inoculation follows once 100% of damage is taken from mana first, and Mind over Matter should be avoided if items and passives can achieve the effect instead. Target maximum mana, energy shield from items, mana cost efficiency, gem levels, cast speed, elemental penetration and crit on rares. Named pieces the creator calls out: Cloak of Defiance if you skip Mind over Matter, Jakani’s Thesis in a high-ES helmet, Kurgal’s Gaze for mana cost efficiency, and Ingenuity or Mageblood on the belt. On the tree, Constant Gale and Force of Will are mandatory as Stormweaver; Refracted Infusion and Storm’s Recollection are strong but optional.

Endgame Notes

For Ascendancy trials, the creator recommends charm charges in the Valley of the Titans, mana regeneration in the crypts, and mana recovery from flasks in the prison. If you generate the wrong infusion types, Elemental Equilibrium can be allocated as a correction. Swapping Storm’s Recollection for Strike Twice improves boss performance.
