Overview
Spell Totems are strong again in Path of Exile 2, and this build pairs them with Grim Pillars — the new Kalguur skill from the Return of the Ancients league mechanic — to devastating effect. Totems plant fields of icy pillars that detonate as enemies walk through them, vaporising packs on contact while concentrated overlapping explosions melt single targets. It is a hands-off mapping playstyle that still scales hard into bosses.
The damage engine is mana stacking through Arc Mage: a larger mana pool means more added lightning damage on every spell, and because Grim Pillars is itself a spell, the totems benefit directly. The build leans on cold scaling — Biting Frost consumes Freeze to trigger the pillar explosions, Frostbomb strips resistances via exposure, and Cold Penetration (later upgraded to Rakiasha’s Flow) pushes damage through.
The Oracle ascendancy ties it together with guaranteed critical hits through Lesser Harm and Forced Outcome, enabling crit-on-hit scaling that would otherwise be unreliable. A weapon-set swap trick effectively doubles available passive points by splitting the tree between the totems and their support skills.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Totems handle clear almost entirely on their own — walk and watch packs explode
- Overlapping Grim Pillar explosions deliver huge single-target burst on bosses
- Guaranteed crits from the Oracle ascendancy unlock strong crit-on-hit scaling
- Weapon-set swap doubles effective passive allocation between totems and utility
- Grim Pillars is cheap to acquire from the league mechanic
Cons
- Totems can block you in tight corridors, forcing a manual Entangle detonation
- Mana Tempest is finicky — cast anything after it and mana drains hard
- Spirit-limited to three totems until gear catches up
- Several interlocking systems (curse-on-totem-loss, weapon sets, freeze consumption) raise the learning curve
Key Skills
- Spell Totem + Grim Pillars — the core; totems summon exploding ice pillars
- Entangle (Biting Frost) — manual trigger that consumes Freeze to detonate pillars
- Frostbomb (Potent Exposure) — strips boss cold/elemental resistance
- Arc Mage — persistent buff converting the mana pool into added lightning damage
- Mana Tempest — situational damage amplifier for boss bursts
Gear & Anointments
The gear is relatively straightforward for a mana stacker. Prioritise +levels to cold spell skills on the staff and amulet to push Grim Pillars, alongside the usual resistances, mana, life, and as much cast speed and spirit as possible. Soul Mantle is the signature chest — it grants spirit and an extra maximum totem, and feeds the curse-on-totem-loss damage package (each curse gives increased damage, with curse downside neutralised by reduced-curse-effect nodes and a rune). Once cast speed and resistances are settled, invest into crit chance and crit damage. Eventually a strong energy-shield armour pairs with Eldritch Battery to convert ES into mana. Endgame Notes
The creator plans a fourth ascendancy into Harmony of Withering as a mana-stacking alternative to Mind over Matter, whose penalty is considered too steep. Unbound Realities is floated as a passive-saving option to cherry-pick keystones. The weapon-set split (set 1 for totems, set 2 for utility) is the key endgame optimisation that roughly doubles passive value.
