Strategy
Expedition is one of the few endgame mechanics in 0.5.5 that pays well from a genuine league-start position, because its difficulty is something you dial in yourself rather than something the map forces on you. The Atlas tree lets you choose whether runic modifiers carry between Vericium remnants, so a fresh character can farm the mechanic at a difficulty it can actually survive and still walk out with several divines per Grand Expedition.
The creator ran this from day one on a budget and reports roughly 500–600 divines’ worth of gear by day three or four — a Headhunter, an Alder’s Legacy, a Gokan’s Resolve and 28 divines banked — while only running tier 6 to tier 11 waystones. The farm remains viable right up until your character is strong enough for genuinely juiced content, at which point the same tree scales with you.
It suits players who want an active, decision-heavy farm. You are placing explosives, reading runic combinations and deciding what to reroll every encounter. If Abyss and Breach appeal because they run themselves, this is not the mechanic for you.
Atlas Tree & Setup
Finish the Precursor Tower and push the Fortress as far as your build allows first. When you hit a wall — waystones too low, Arbiter of Ash or an Enigma Chamber boss out of reach — travel southeast to the Ruins of King’s March and complete Danig’s questline to unlock the Expedition Atlas.
Expedition tree priority:
- Double or Nothing first, set to option 2, will not add runic modifiers. This keeps each Vericium remnant self-contained and is the correct league-start choice. Move to option 3 only once your build handles it.
- Expanding Territory — swap this between its two modes: 10% chance for an additional Vericium remnant encounter when running maps and Grand Expeditions, 25% increased chance for Expedition encounters when running a logbook.
- Calculated Investment — the 25% chance for remnants to count as affected by a power rune juices both monsters and rewards. Fall back to increased quantity of items if that is too much.
- Tomb of the Fallen Knight helps you self-sustain logbooks; the remaining nodes are all fine and can be taken in any order.
Atlas master is Jato, taken only after the Fortress is complete. Pick Unexpected Missions (once you can corrupt waystones — use Trove Seekers before that), Eastern Knowledge so Vericium remnants can be rerolled an extra time, Partial Translations, and Untold Histories for the increased Lineage support find.
Tablets are irradiated only. Monster rarity and increased number of rare monsters are the two modifiers worth paying for; early on, run whatever irradiated tablets you have.
Investment & Returns
- Investment: low — the tree and Jato are free; the only real cost is an Utrid Saga (roughly 40–50 exalts at time of recording) and decent irradiated tablets
- Returns: roughly 2–3 divines per Grand Expedition on a budget setup, with occasional high-value remnant rewards on top
- Scaling: returns climb as you allow runic modifiers to carry, add a third tablet, and max out waystone modifiers
Step-by-step
- Complete the campaign, Precursor Tower, and as much of the Fortress as your build handles.
- Travel to the Ruins of King’s March and finish Danig’s questline to unlock the Expedition Atlas.
- Spec Double or Nothing to will not add runic modifiers, then Expanding Territory and Calculated Investment.
- Finish the Fortress, then complete the Jato Atlas master and take its four Expedition-relevant nodes.
- Run travel maps fast; prioritise maps flagged with the Expedition symbol (Grand Expeditions). Watch for Secluded Temple maps if you are target-farming the Utrid boss.
- When revealing a logbook, prioritise rumours that give Grand Expeditions. Among boss rumours, Starrinker and Origin of the Fall are the ones worth taking.
- Before each map, confirm the Atlas tree is on the correct Expanding Territory mode and that Utrid Saga is active if you own one.
- Enter the map, walk the whole layout once to read the points of interest, then place all explosives and detonate.
- Reroll runic combinations only when they show three or four mods or the reward is poor; never reroll a five-plus mod combination.
- Prioritise Vericium remnants, but do not skip rare chests — with Trove Master they drop meaningful raw currency.
Risks
- Grand Expeditions are lost on death, so run waystones with extra revives until your build is settled
- Roughly 10–15 minutes per Grand Expedition — this is a slow, deliberate farm, not a speed strategy
- Utrid Saga and good irradiated tablets both climb in price as the league progresses
- Turning up Calculated Investment or allowing runic modifier carryover can make monsters lethal well before the rewards justify it
