Strategy
The reworked Trial of Chaos in 0.5 is one of the few farms in Path of Exile 2 that needs no atlas points, no tablets, and no market preparation at all. You buy in with a key, click, and run. Everything that makes it profitable is generated inside the trial itself, which is what separates it from atlas-based strategies that depend on entry-item prices staying favourable.
The engine is the modifier stack. Every room you clear hands you an afflicting modifier, and every modifier grants item rarity. After ten rooms the trial offers you a choice between taking rewards and continuing — you continue, because each additional room compounds both your rarity and the difficulty. The creator’s reference run went thirty rooms deep and produced somewhere between 15 and 20 divines’ worth of loot in roughly thirty to forty-five minutes.
This is a build-gated farm rather than a currency-gated one. Because you are voluntarily stacking hostile modifiers on yourself, the run ends when your character can no longer handle the combination it has accumulated. A defensive profile that covers a wide range of damage types is worth far more here than raw damage.
Atlas Tree & Setup
There is nothing to configure. No atlas passives, no tablets, no waystone crafting — the trial key is the entire investment.
Character setup is where the work goes. The creator runs an Earthshatter Warbringer at 75% block chance, and identifies block as the single mechanic that carries the strategy: a blocked hit is a fully negated hit, which lets you absorb most of the modifier-boosted damage the trial throws at you. A Svalinn shield doubles block, and the Warbringer passive that pushes block to the 94% cap is called out as the version that makes you effectively immortal in this content. When shopping for a Svalinn, look for the lowest possible “damage taken from blocked hits” roll.
The secondary requirement is movement speed for the transitions between rooms — the build stacks it through weapon-set passives, a movement-speed talisman, and Lightning Warp gained on-block for repositioning.
Investment & Returns
- Investment: low — a Trial of Chaos key and nothing else
- Returns: high — roughly 15–20 divine per full thirty-room run; each room takes around 10–15 minutes unminmaxed
- Scaling: returns scale with rooms survived, not with currency spent. Rarity modifiers range from 4% at level one to 30% at level five, so a deep run stacks a very large multiplier
Note the important limitation: your personal rarity only affects ground loot from rare monsters. It does not affect the reward chests at the end of each room. Sacrifice rooms are a separate income stream — you can offer currency to have it doubled, and a lucky divine sacrifice is where the largest single spikes come from. You can also decline every sacrifice and simply press continue; some players have hit ten divine orbs from Bag of Mastery rewards without sacrificing anything.
Step-by-step
- Enter Trial of Chaos with a key. No other preparation required.
- Clear rooms and take a modifier after each. At the ten-room checkpoint, choose to continue rather than cash out.
- Prioritise modifiers that add ground loot from rare monsters — the creator rates this the second most valuable modifier type, because divines do drop from rare ground loot.
- Take the highest-level rarity modifiers you can survive. Level five rarity modifiers give 30%; level one gives as little as 4%.
- At sacrifice rooms, decide per-run whether to offer currency. Declining is always allowed and costs you nothing.
- Skip modifiers that break your specific build — the recovery-prevention modifier in particular will end runs for energy-shield or life-regen characters.
- Push toward thirty rooms if your defences hold, then take the rewards.
Risks
- The run can fail outright. Stacked modifiers compound, and a combination your build cannot handle ends the trial with nothing banked.
- Recovery-blocking modifiers are build-specific run-enders. Know before you enter which ones you cannot take.
- Sacrificing currency for a doubling chance is a real loss when it goes wrong — it is optional, and skipping it does not break the strategy.
- There is a known lever bug: interacting with a room switch can lock you out of continuing. Do not panic and do not abandon the key. Teleport to town and re-enter — the key, the room and all your modifiers are saved, and the room restarts.
- Time per room (10–15 minutes) means a full run is a real time commitment; this is not a farm you dip into for five minutes.
