Strategy
Essence farming exists to solve a specific awkward window: you have just entered the Atlas, you still owe the Fortress, the Arbiters, and the Abyss and Breach questlines, and you have no currency to upgrade the character that has to complete all of it. Juiced Abyss, Breach or Delirium all demand a build you cannot yet afford, so essences fill the gap.
The appeal is that essences need almost no investment. The relevant nodes sit at the very start of the Atlas tree, they get stronger as you unlock more of it, and you farm them incidentally while pushing toward your actual objectives. The creator tested it for roughly an hour and twenty minutes and cleared five to six divines from essences alone — before counting item bases, boss fragments and general map drops.
This is explicitly not a high-ceiling strategy. It is a bridge from Atlas entry to the point where a real farming mechanic becomes viable.
Atlas Tree & Setup
- Essence of Dowsing — take option 8, Greater Essence of Ruin (chaos resistance). It holds value most stably across the league. Options 5–7 are elemental resistances: strong early, they decay in price as the league matures.
- Chosen Path — available once you have progressed the Fortress gateways. Set it to essences for 100% increased chance of that content. It biases toward essences rather than guaranteeing them.
- Eastern Enigma — when you first enter the Atlas, push right. The eastern and western Enigmas offer different unlocks, and the eastern one grants a guaranteed additional essence.
- Take the node that lets you exalt an essence to add another. Whether you use it constantly depends on how many exalts you can spare.
- The most important node on the right side raises your chance of Greater Essence of Opulence — the only essence granting a guaranteed tier 1 modifier, and it also gives item rarity, so it holds value for the whole league.
- Corrupted Lattices — unlocked after the Arbiter of Ash. Take the first option; the key line is will always change their essences.
For tablets, start with any tablet carrying map contains an additional essence — read carefully, you want “additional”, not “100% increased”. Upgrade to Overseer tablets, which guarantee a powerful map boss (and therefore an extra essence via Overlord’s Domain) and can themselves roll two additional essences.
Investment & Returns
- Investment: low — any cheap additional-essence tablets, plus optional exalts for essence upgrading
- Returns: roughly 5–6 divines in 80 minutes from essences alone, excluding bases, fragments and incidental drops
- Scaling: three Overseer tablets can reach six additional essences plus one from the tree — seven per map — at the cost of noticeably longer maps
Step-by-step
- On entering the Atlas, head right toward the Eastern Enigma for the guaranteed additional essence.
- Spec Essence of Dowsing to Greater Essence of Ruin, then Chosen Path to essences once the Fortress gateways open it.
- Take the essence-exalt node and the Greater Essence of Opulence node on the right side.
- After defeating the Arbiter of Ash, take Corrupted Lattices option 1 for the always-changes-essence line.
- Socket two or three tablets with map contains an additional essence; move to Overseer tablets when you can afford them.
- Run maps toward whatever objective you actually need — fragments, gateways, questlines — and collect essences on the way.
- Pick up every checkpoint and kill the map boss so all rares reveal and no essence is missed.
- Vaal rare monsters holding low-value essences (added damage rolls, weak perfect essences) — corruption can reroll them into something better, including the unique special essences.
- Price-check on poe.ninja before selling; Opulence and Hysteria sit at the top.
- Dump unsellable essences into the reforging bench to convert them into something with a market.
Risks
- Low ceiling by design — this will not compete with a developed juicing strategy
- Essence prices fall through the league, especially the elemental resistance ones
- Stacking Overseer tablets slows maps considerably, which conflicts with the questline progression this strategy is meant to support
- Exalting every essence you meet burns currency you may need for gear
