Strategy
The Atlas tree is the core endgame progression system in Path of Exile 2, and as of 0.5.4 it contains 336 nodes. Every point spent buys map bonuses — increased rarity, more monsters, more strongboxes, rogue exiles — which raise both difficulty and payout. Filling the tree is therefore a direct multiplier on every farming strategy you run afterwards, which is why this method is worth front-loading.
The naive approach is to grind maps one at a time, since each completed map inside the fortress grants roughly one passive point. At 336 nodes that is untenable. The method here instead routes straight through the fortress questline to unlock tower activations, each of which retroactively completes an entire wall section of maps and hands over roughly 40 points at once.
The discipline that makes this fast is refusing to get sidetracked. At each stage you path directly to the next objective rather than clearing maps along the way — the tower payout will retroactively credit those maps anyway, so clearing them early is wasted time.
Atlas Tree & Setup
No specific atlas allocation is required to start; the prerequisite is finishing the campaign, which grants access to mapping and the Atlas itself. For the later repeat cycles, tablets with high waystone drop chance are worth running on Patriarch and Matriarch halls, since they give those halls a chance to drop multiple Origin Sparks and Cradles per clear rather than one each.
Investment & Returns
- Investment: mid — free for the first tower via the questline; roughly 7 div for a Spark plus Cradle pair, or about 8 div for a pre-combined Origin Core, on each subsequent cycle
- Returns: mid — approximately 40 atlas passive points per tower activation, against roughly 200 points still outstanding after the first tower
- Scaling: four to five purchased cycles will complete the tree, depending on how many fortress maps you have already cleared organically
Step-by-step
- Finish the campaign to unlock mapping and the Atlas.
- Head to the Ancient Gateway first — this opens the fortress.
- From the fortress starting maps, path straight to the Burning Monolith. Do not detour into side maps.
- At the Monolith you are directed to the eastern and western gateways. Open the western gateway, then clear the western Enigma Chamber boss; repeat on the eastern side.
- Return to the Burning Monolith and defeat its boss. This opens the Origin Tower section.
- Path directly to the Origin Tower, which sends you to the Patriarch and Matriarch halls behind it.
- Clear both halls to collect the Origin Spark and the Origin Cradle.
- Take both to the Engine Room at the Origin Tower and insert them into the Precursor Reactor to combine them into an Origin Core.
- Carry the Core to the top of the tower and insert it to fight the final boss.
- On victory, activate one of the side towers. It completes every uncleared map in that wall section, granting roughly 40 points at once.
- To repeat: farm Patriarch and Matriarch halls outside the fortress — look for beams of light indicating a citadel or hall — or simply buy a Spark and Cradle (or a finished Origin Core) from the currency exchange. Combine, refight the boss, and activate a fresh tower section.
Risks
- Clearing maps along the way is the main time sink. Those maps get credited by the tower activation regardless, so early clearing is wasted effort.
- The Burning Monolith and Origin Tower bosses are real fights; an undergeared character will stall the whole chain here.
- The buy-a-core shortcut costs 7-8 div per cycle and needs four to five cycles, so completing the tree this way is a meaningful currency outlay.
- Hall drops outside the fortress are RNG-dependent even with waystone drop tablets, so the free route can take considerably longer than expected.
