Strategy
Patch 0.5 hands a fresh mapper roughly a dozen quests the moment the campaign ends, and the resulting sprawl is the real problem: without a plan you burn hours drifting between objectives instead of building an engine. This strategy fixes an order — climb tiers, unlock one Atlas master, unlock the Atlas passive tree, then commit to a single league mechanic — and treats everything else as noise until those four are done.
Map sustain in PoE 2 is unreliable by default, so the early priority is Waystone economy rather than raw loot. The recommended pace is simply to Alch-and-go: a magic map sits at roughly 25% Waystone drop chance, while a four-mod alched map pushes that toward 65%. Combined with a handful of Atlas passives, sustain stops being something you think about.
For the league mechanic itself, the honest takeaway from 0.5 is that every mechanic is now good, so the choice is mostly taste. Ritual is the obvious pick for a Ritual event since it appears in every zone. This guide instead pushes Abyss, which is simpler to execute than Azeri’s Temple and drops both raw currency and high-value omens.
Atlas Tree & Setup
Four early Waystone nodes carry the whole sustain plan: Pathkeepers, Valuable Paths (quantity of Waystones from map bosses), the Waystone-rarity node, and Archaeological Interest (Waystone quantity from map bosses plus tablet quantity). Top of the World adds more Waystones but sits further off-path. With all four allocated and an alch-and-go habit, sustain is effectively solved.
Cities are worth calling out: the tree lets cities count as an additional biome, and a city map supports a fourth tablet. Desert biomes were strong in 0.5 for rare-monster and essence density; grass is a solid secondary. Effectiveness is a broadly excellent stat — it raises both monster toughness and item quantity, a clean risk-for-reward trade.
For Hilda, take her bonuses row by row as you complete her four kills. Standouts: Breeding Season (rare monsters), Mighty Prey (chance to upgrade map bosses to powerful — skip it if you already run Overseer tablets), Ancient Inscriptions (tablet mod effect, strong once you run six-mod maps and three tablets), Patient Batu, and Claim Territories. Gutting and Skinning is near-worthless while mapping but good for your first pinnacle kills, and loadouts swap freely. Overlord’s Influence and Overlord’s Domain are the payoff keystones once you have worked through a chunk of the Citadel.
On the Abyss tree, the recommended opening is Lord of the Pit and Proliferation — guaranteed strongboxes from abyssal pits, plus pits scattered across the whole map so they overlap other mechanics. From Below is the other early pick. Then fill the middle: Strange Aversions (each faction — Ulaman, Kirgle, Amanumu — weights different chest and currency rewards), Rotting Bones for desecrated currency, and Vile Treasure for omens. Close to the Surface makes Abyssal Depths dramatically more rewarding. Finish with Stir the Swarm, Endless War, Overrun, and Armaments of Evil last. On the right side, rogue-exile nodes matter because a rogue exile consumed by the Abyss can spawn a Heart of the Well.
Investment & Returns
- Investment: low. Alchemy orbs and cheap generic tablets (a couple of Irradiated plus an Overseer) are the running cost. The one real outlay is an Origin Core to skip the Citadel grind — down from about 8 Divines to under 5 at time of recording. Buying an Origin Spark plus an Origin Cradle separately is often cheaper and carries genuine arbitrage potential.
- Returns: high. A single Abyssal Depths produced three Divines on stream; another produced four Omens of Abyssal Echo. Omens of Light were sitting at roughly 1.6 Divines. A mediocre Heart of the Well is three to four Divines; a well-rolled one reaches double or triple digits.
- Scaling: the Citadel’s roughly 336 Atlas passive points are the single biggest multiplier in the game — rare tablets with four mods instead of two, plus stacked quantity bonuses.
Step-by-step
- Alch-and-go every map and prioritise the powerful-map-boss icon to climb one tier per clear.
- Take the four Waystone Atlas passives as soon as they are reachable.
- Beeline Hilda’s campsite — she is the fastest Atlas master to unlock, roughly three maps from the start. Jedo and Doryani are arguably stronger but far slower.
- Complete Hilda’s four great-beast kills, on progressively higher tiers, to open her bonus rows.
- Follow the Citadel breadcrumbs: Precursor Tower to the west, Ancient Gateway, then the western and eastern gateways and the Enigma Chambers, ending at the Arbiter of Ash. You have infinite attempts on it.
- Continue to the Origin Tower via the Patriarch and Matriarch Halls and defeat the Arbiter of Divinity.
- Buy an Origin Core (or farm an Origin Spark and Origin Cradle and combine them at the tower base) and kill the Arbiter of Divinity a second time. This marks every Citadel map complete and hands you the whole passive tree without clearing hundreds of maps by hand.
- Allocate the tree — cities as a second biome for the fourth tablet slot, plus effectiveness and biome bonuses such as Exalts dropping as Chaos.
- Pick one league mechanic and commit. For Abyss: Lord of the Pit and Proliferation first, then the middle section, then Close to the Surface.
- Skip rituals you have no tree points for, but still kill the monsters near them — that alone yielded around 15 tablets.
Risks
- Atlas passive points are permanent. A few gold-tier points are widely considered weak, and some players hold them unspent rather than commit.
- Running a league mechanic you have not specced into is inefficient; the guide’s own author sits at 0 of 36 Ritual points and skips them deliberately.
- Azeri’s Temple is genuinely rewarding but complex, and is not a good first pick.
- The Arbiter of Ash needs roughly a Tier 15 blasting character. Infinite portals make it forgiving in softcore, but it is a real problem in hardcore.
- Fully juiced Abyss maps are heavy on your GPU, which the creator flags twice.
- Origin Core prices move fast on a fresh economy; the quoted 5 Divines is a snapshot, not a fixture.
