Strategy

Patch 0.5.5 quietly changed how the Fortress hands out Atlas passive points, and that change rewrites the opening hours of a fresh league. Previously every section of the Fortress had to be cleared individually through the map device — a slow, tedious grind before the Atlas tree opened up. Now, once the main quest line is done, you can head back out into the Atlas, find a second Arbiter of Divinity key, and beat the harder version of that boss. Doing so auto-completes every remaining Fortress section and unlocks the full Atlas point pool in one go.

The practical takeaway is a sequencing decision rather than a farming route: do not spend the early league slowly grinding Fortress sections. Run the campaign portion of the quest, then immediately venture out to hunt the two halls, take the second Arbiter fight, and collect all your points at once. Everything after that is just spending points where you want them.

This is aimed at league-start players who want the Atlas tree open as early as possible, and at anyone who defaulted to the old section-by-section route out of habit.

Atlas Tree & Setup

You get roughly ten Atlas points from the quest-line portion alone, which is what you have to work with while you are out hunting the two halls. The recommendation is to put those into a crafting-oriented opener rather than a scattered mix:

  • Beeline the essence cluster — increased essence chance, increased chance for rare essence monsters to roll extra modifiers, increased pack size, and a chance for an additional essence (so two or three per encounter).
  • Spend leftover points on rare monster density and rarity — the notable granting each monster modifier at least 100% increased rarity, with rare monsters carrying at least three modifiers.
  • Twin Threats is a strong alternative to the filler nodes: one rare monster in the area is duplicated, which also applies to essence rares.
  • A second essence group exists further up the tree in the adjacent quadrant if you want to deepen the investment later.

Mechanic-unlock points (Breach, Abyss, Delirium, Ritual, the temple line) still require you to actually run each mechanic — the Arbiter shortcut does not cover those. Specific node names and exact point counts should be confirmed against the source video.

Investment & Returns

  • Investment: low — this is a routing and point-allocation decision, not a strategy that needs currency up front.
  • Returns: mid — the payoff is a fully unlocked Atlas tree hours earlier than the old route, plus early essence income to fund crafting.
  • Scaling: the essence opener scales with how much you craft. Abrasion (physical mods) and Insulation (fire mods) are called out as the most useful early essence types for gearing and capping resistances.

Step-by-step

  1. Play the campaign quest line through the Fortress and take the first Arbiter of Divinity fight as normal.
  2. Immediately venture back out into the Atlas instead of running Fortress sections through the map device.
  3. Look for the Patriarch Hall and Matriarch Hall — they are marked by orange beams in the sky and spawn close to one another, so finding one usually means the second is nearby.
  4. Use the two keys to fight the harder Arbiter version. All remaining Fortress sections complete automatically and the full Atlas point pool unlocks.
  5. While hunting the halls, spend your ~10 quest points on the essence cluster plus rare-monster rarity nodes so the maps you run along the way still pay out.
  6. Once everything is unlocked, respend freely into whichever endgame mechanic you intend to farm.

Risks

  • The Fortress shortcut still requires beating a harder Arbiter, so an undergeared character may stall on that fight and lose the time the route was meant to save.
  • Hall spawns depend on your Atlas layout — how quickly you find them varies run to run.
  • The essence opener is a crafting-first choice. If you would rather sell raw currency than craft, a strongbox or shrine opener may suit you better.
  • Which mechanic is worth farming first depends on what appears near your starting Atlas region, so the plan beyond the unlock is not fixed.
