Strategy
Path of Exile 2 drops you out of the campaign into a sprawling Atlas with several competing quest lines, and most of them are a distraction. The one objective that matters is fully unlocking your Atlas passive points, because those points are what make every future map — and every farming strategy you eventually run — actually pay out. Everything else can wait.
The method is boss rushing. Until the Atlas tree is unlocked, league mechanics inside maps return very little, so maps get treated as pathing rather than as content. Run everything on magic rarity, skip most mechanics, and beeline the map boss. The only worthwhile exceptions are Essence and Shrines, which cost almost no time.
Tier sustain is the other half of the plan. Take every Atlas passive that adds quantity to boss drops, prioritise pathing through maps with Powerful Map Bosses because they can drop waystones a tier higher, and run those maps at rare and at the highest tier you own. Anything without a Powerful Map Boss stays on magic.
Atlas Tree & Setup
Waystone tiers run T1–T5 white, T6–T10 yellow, T11–T15 red, with a Vaal Orb on a T15 offering a corrupt into T16. Maps reforge three-to-one to climb a tier, and Doryani sells maps one tier below your highest completed map — which makes buying and reforging a legitimate way to leapfrog if your build is ahead of your waystone supply.
For early Atlas passives, path right through the Essence cluster: it is the shortest route and it picks up the boss-drop quantity nodes. The left-side Shrine path gives more player power but less loot. Hilda’s first master mission point should go into Mighty Prey for the 25% chance to upgrade map bosses into Powerful Map Bosses, which directly accelerates tier progression.
Once all points are unlocked, spec into everything except a few situational traps: Survival of the Fittest hurts Orb of Light farming because it combines rares, Man Trap is a buff node, and the three small wall-quantity nodes have minimal impact on currency conversion.
Investment & Returns
- Investment: low — this is a progression route, not a strategy that needs currency up front
- Returns: indirect but compounding — a fully unlocked Atlas tree raises the yield of every farming strategy you run afterwards
- Scales with: how efficiently you path. Boss rushing on magic maps and skipping mechanics is what makes the route fast; full clears along the way roughly double the time for no extra reward
Step-by-step
- After the campaign, complete the first map near your spawn, then head to Hilda’s campsite and clear the first Great Beast for a master mission point. Take Mighty Prey.
- Clear the nearest tower to trigger the cutscene, then path to the Ancient Gateway, going through as many Powerful Map Boss maps as possible.
- Clear the Ancient Gateway to open the outer Fortress. Every map completed in Fortress territory now awards Atlas passive points.
- Reach the Burning Monolith, then clear the Eastern and Western Gateways. The Eastern Gateway needs a T5 or higher map — reforge three-to-one if you are short.
- Clear the Eastern and Western Enigmas (T10+) for the Wither Crest and Ancient Crest fragments, then attempt Arbiter of Ash. He has roughly 1.2 million HP across two phases, with unlimited attempts.
- Start the Arbiter of Divinity quest line: travel to the Origin Tower, then clear the Patriarch Hall and Matriarch Hall for the Origin Spark and Origin Cradle. Expect red maps here; push to T15 if your character can handle it.
- Kill Arbiter of Divinity. He has 45% lightning resistance, so bring exposure or a curse if you play lightning. As of 0.5, a second Arbiter of Divinity kill unlocks the rest of your Atlas points — clear the outside-Fortress Matriarch and Patriarch (look for the orange beam in the fog), gather a second Spark and Cradle, and return.
- Finish your master missions — Hilda’s remaining three Great Beasts via the Corrupted Nexus, then J’s four anomaly maps.
- Unlock the league mechanics you actually intend to farm: Ritual near the Fortress, Delirium at Wither Willow, Abyss at the Hive Colony, Grand Expedition at Ruins of King’s March, and Vaal Runes at the Temple.
Risks
- Attempting Arbiter of Ash undergeared turns a short fight into a long grind — upgrade gear first, even though attempts are unlimited
- The fourth Trial of Chaos or Trial of the Sekhemas ascendancy point is listed as optional but is worth 30–40% more damage for most classes; skipping it slows everything downstream
- Fully speccing the Atlas tree without checking your intended strategy can actively hurt it — Survival of the Fittest in particular conflicts with Orb of Light farming
- Full map clears instead of boss rushing during progression waste a large amount of time for very little loot while the tree is still empty
